Abstract

A clad tube ( 21 ) is formed by melting and extruding a polymer, such as PMMA. The molten polymer is extruded through an extrusion die ( 12 ) to form a soft clad ( 20 ). The soft clad ( 20 ) is forwarded to a molding die ( 13 ) to correct the shape of the soft clad ( 20 ). A decompression chamber ( 31 ) in the molding die ( 13 ) is decompressed so that the outer surface of the soft clad ( 20 ) is tightly in contact with forming surface ( 30 b ) of the molding die ( 13 ). After molding the soft clad ( 20 ) in the molding die ( 13 ), the clad tube ( 20 ) with low fluctuation in thickness is obtained.

Claims (31)

1 . A method for manufacturing a hollow plastic optical part, comprising the steps of:

melting a polymer;

extruding said polymer from an extrusion die to obtain a hollow molten polymer; and

correcting the shape of said molten polymer through a molding die.

2 . A method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

driving a decompression pump to decompress said molding die, said decompression pump being connected to said molding die through a plurality of holes formed in an inner surface of said molding die, whereby said molten polymer is tightly fit to said inner surface of said molding die.

3 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the extrusion speed of said molten polymer in said molding die is equal to or more than 0.1 m/min and equal to or more than 10 m/min.

4 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the temperature of said molten polymer is equal to or more than (Tg+30)° C. and equal to or more than (Tg+120)° C.;

wherein Tg is the glass transition temperature of said polymer.

5 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the apparent viscosity of said molten polymer near the exit of said extrusion die is 500 to 10000 Pa·s.

6 . A method for manufacturing a plastic optical product, comprising the steps of:

injecting polymerized material inside a hollow area of said plastic optical part; and

hardening said polymerized material.

7 . A method for manufacturing a plastic optical fiber comprising the step of:

drawing said plastic optical product manufactured by the process of claim 6 ,

wherein said plastic optical part is a clad of said plastic optical fiber, and said polymerized material is a core of said plastic optical fiber.

8 . A plastic optical product manufactured by the method of claim 6 .

9 . A plastic optical fiber manufactured by drawing said plastic optical product of claim 8 ,

wherein said plastic optical part is a clad of said plastic optical fiber, and said polymerized material is a core of said plastic optical fiber.

10 . An apparatus for manufacturing a plastic optical part, comprising:

means for melting a polymer;

an extrusion die to extrude said polymer to obtain a hollow molten polymer; and

a molding die, disposed in the downstream side of said extrusion die, to correct the shape of said molten polymer.

11 . An apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising:

a decompression pump to decompress said molding die, said decompression pump being connected to said molding die through a plurality of holes formed in an inner surface of said molding die, whereby said molten polymer is tightly fit to said inner surface of said molding die.

12 . An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the air pressure at said inner surface of said molding die is 20 kPa to 50 kPa.

13 . An apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising a throat member fixed to an entrance of said molding die.

14 . An apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising means for cooling said molten polymer after passing said molding die.

15 . An apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the following relationship is satisfied;

0<L<20

wherein L (mm) is the distance between an exit of said extrusion die and an entrance of said molding die.
