Abstract

A method and device for vaporizing a liquid reactant. A vaporizing plate having a top surface defines a liquid flow channel, the channel being laterally delimited by edges having a height greater than a minimum thickness of liquid reactant required to generate vapor under film or nucleate boiling regime. A heating system is associated to the vaporizing plate for heating the liquid reactant over a minimum temperature required to generate vapor under nucleate or, preferably, film boiling regime. A cap covers the vaporizing plate to collect the vapor at a predetermined pressure and provided with a vapor exit and a liquid feeder feeds the liquid reactant onto the vaporizing plate.

Claims (13)

1. A method for vaporizing liquid reactants in a process for producing a glass soot preform, comprising:

providing a vaporizing plate comprising a horizontal flow channel;

forming in said horizontal flow channel a continuous stream of liquid reactant, wherein said continuous stream of liquid reactant has a thickness sufficient for generating vapor and bubbles under film or nucleate boiling regime;

heating said vaporizing plate to a temperature sufficient to generate vapor and bubbles under film or nucleate boiling regime from said continuous stream of liquid reactant in said horizontal flow channel; and

generating vapor and bubbles under film or nucleate boiling regime from said continuous stream of liquid reactant in said horizontal flow channel via said heating.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said forming a continuous stream of liquid reactant comprises continuously flowing said liquid reactant into said horizontal flow channel, wherein said horizontal flow channel is delimited by lateral walls whose height is equal to at least said thickness sufficient for generating vapor and bubbles under film or nucleate boiling regime.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said heating said vaporizing plate comprises heating a surface delimiting said horizontal flow channel.

4. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising identifying a pressure sufficient for use in producing a glass soot preform, collecting said vapor until said pressure is reached and conveying said vapor subjected to said pressure to a vapor utilization site.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising flowing said continuous stream of liquid reactant into a further channel positioned at a lower level with respect to said horizontal flow channel.

6. A process for manufacturing a glass preform, comprising:

vaporizing a liquid reactant via the method according to any one of claims 1 - 4 , 5 to generate a vapor reactant;

feeding said vapor reactant to a burner for forming glass soot particles; and

depositing said glass soot particles onto a deposition target to grow said glass preform.
