Abstract

A display device comprising a light guide ( 12 ), a front plate ( 14 ), and an intermediate electromechanically operable foil ( 16 ). Two electrode layers ( 22, 23 ) are arranged on either side of the foil ( 16 ) to induce electrostatic forces on the foil ( 16 ) and to bring selected portions of the foil into contact with the light guide ( 12 ), thereby extracting light from the light guide ( 12 ). The second electrode layer ( 22 ) is arranged on the opposite side of the light guide ( 12 ) with reference to the foil ( 16 ), and separated from the light guide ( 12 ) by means of a refractive layer ( 28 ). As no electrode layer is required on the light guide itself, the light path of rays extracted from the light guide is cleaner, and the absorption of light is reduced. The light guide can have a thickness such that the light extracted from the light guide per unit length is sufficient to allow for line-at-a-time addressing.

Claims (34)

1. A display device comprising:

a light guide optically coupled to a light source;

a front plate facing the light guide;

a first electrode layer arranged on the front plate;

a second electrode layer arranged on the opposite side of the light guide with respect to the front plate and separated from the light guide by a refractive layer, wherein the refractive layer is deposited on the light guide, and the second electrode layer is disposed directly adjacent the refractive layer; and

a movable element having a third electrode layer arranged between the light guide and the front plate;

wherein the electrode layers are arranged to induce electrostatic forces on the element and to bring selected portions of the element into contact with the light guide, thereby extracting light from the light guide, and wherein the light guide has a thickness such that the light extracted from the light guide per unit length enables line-at-a-time addressing.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode layer is disposed on a back plate arranged on the opposite side of the light guide with reference to the front plate, and wherein the refractive layer comprises an air gap separating the back plate from the light guide.

3. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the light guide comprises a glass plate having a thickness of 0.05-1 mm.

4. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode layer is unstructured and wherein the first and third electrode layers are structured into sets of electrodes.

5. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the third electrode layer is unstructured, and wherein the first and second electrode layers are structured into sets of electrodes.

6. The display device of claim 1 , further comprising means for modulating the intensity of the light source.

7. The display device of claim 3 , wherein the glass plate has a thickness of 0.1-0.3 mm.

8. The display device of claim 4 , wherein the first electrode layer comprises a first set of parallel electrodes, and the third electrode layer comprises a second set of parallel electrodes arranged orthogonal to the first set.

9. The display device of claim 4 , further comprising spacers arranged between the front plate and the foil, extending perpendicular to the second set of electrodes.

10. The display device of claim 4 , further comprising spacers arranged between the light guide and the foil, extending perpendicular to the second set of electrodes.

11. The display device of claim 5 , wherein the first electrode layer comprises a first set of parallel electrodes, and the second electrode layer comprises a second set of parallel electrodes arranged orthogonal to the first set.

12. A display device comprising:

a light guide optically coupled to a light source;

a front plate facing the light guide;

a first electrode layer arranged on the front plate;

a second electrode layer arranged on the opposite side of the light guide with respect to the front plate and separated from the light guide by a refractive layer, wherein the refractive layer is deposited on the light guide, and the second electrode layer is disposed directly adjacent the refractive layer; and

a movable element having a third electrode layer arranged between the light guide and the front plate;

wherein the electrode layers are arranged to induce electrostatic forces on the element and to bring selected portions of the element into contact with the light guide, thereby extracting light from the light guide.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the second electrode layer is disposed on a back plate arranged on the opposite side of the light guide with reference to the front plate, and wherein the refractive layer comprises an air gap separating the back plate from the light guide.

14. The display device of claim 12 , wherein the light guide comprises a glass plate having a thickness of 0.05-1 mm.

15. The display device of claim 12 , wherein the second electrode layer is unstructured and wherein the first and third electrode layers are structured into sets of electrodes.

16. The display device of claim 12 , wherein the third electrode layer is unstructured, and wherein the first and second electrode layers are structured into sets of electrodes.

17. The display device of claim 12 , further comprising means for modulating the intensity of the light source.

18. The display device of claim 14 , wherein the glass plate has a thickness of 0.1-0.3 mm.

19. The display device of claim 15 , wherein the first electrode layer comprises a first set of parallel electrodes, and the third electrode layer comprises a second set of parallel electrodes arranged orthogonal to the first set.

20. The display device of claim 15 , further comprising spacers arranged between the front plate and the foil, extending perpendicular to the second set of electrodes.

21. The display device of claim 15 , further comprising spacers arranged between the light guide and the foil, extending perpendicular to the second set of electrodes.

22. The display device of claim 16 , wherein the first electrode layer comprises a first set of parallel electrodes, and the second electrode layer comprises a second set of parallel electrodes arranged orthogonal to the first set.
