Methods and materials for treating autoimmune diseases and conditions

The methods include administering to the subject a compound which inhibits the subject's classical complement pathway. Also disclosed are methods for suppressing hyperacute graft rejection in a subject. The methods include administering to the subject a compound which inhibits the subject's classical complement pathway. Compositions which include a specific inhibitor of C1q and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient are also described.
1. A method for treating myasthenia gravis in a subject, said method comprising:
administering to the subject an anti-C1q antibody which inhibits the subject's classical complement pathway, wherein said anti-C1q antibody is a monoclonal antibody or chimeric humanized antibody thereof that binds C1q.
