Abstract

Various methods and devices are described for retaining a medical implant within a body cavity. According to one aspect, at least a portion ( 16 ) of a medical implant is positioned within a body cavity, and a wall of the body cavity is re-shaped such that the re-shaped wall ( 14 ) prevents migration of the medical implant out of the body cavity. The re-shaped body wall may form a tissue pocket, tunnel, or other barrier against migration of the implant.

Claims (26)

1. A method of treating a patient having an esophagus, a stomach, and a gastro-esophageal junction, the method comprising:

forming a plurality of discrete tissue plications on a wall of a gastrointestinal tract at or adjacent the gastro-esophageal junction; and

coupling an individual restrictor member to each tissue plication of the plurality of plications, wherein the restrictor members collectively are configured to restrict a flow of food from the esophagus into the stomach.

2. The method according to claim 1 ,

wherein forming the plurality of discrete tissue plications includes pulling tissue to form a tissue fold with multiple tissue layers, and securing the tissue layers of the fold to one another.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein securing the tissue layers includes securing the tissue layers using sutures.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein securing the tissue layers includes securing the tissue layers using staples.

5. The method according to claim 2 , further including forming a hole in the tissue fold, wherein the securing step includes securing the tissue layers around the edges of the hole.

6. The method according to claim 2 , further including positioning a reinforcing material between the tissue layers.

7. The method according to claim 2 , further including promoting adhesion between the tissue layers.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein promoting adhesion between the tissue layers includes positioning a tissue growth promoting material between the tissue layers.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein forming the plurality of discrete tissue plications comprises forming four plications.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a shape of each individual restrictor member is substantially similar.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of tissue plications are evenly spaced about the gastrointestinal tract.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein three individual restrictor members are attached to the wall of the gastrointestinal tract.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one restrictor member includes a wedge shape.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the individual restrictor members are attached to the wall of the gastrointestinal tract by clips.

15. A method of treating a patient having an esophagus, a stomach, and a gastro-esophageal junction, the method comprising:

forming a tissue plication on a wall of a gastrointestinal tract at or adjacent the gastro-esophageal junction, the tissue plication including a width in a direction transverse to a flow of food from the esophagus into the stomach; and

coupling a restrictor member to the tissue plication, the restrictor member being configured to restrict the flow of food from the esophagus into the stomach, wherein a width of the restrictor member is greater than the width of the tissue plication.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein forming a tissue plication includes forming a plurality of tissue plications on the wall, and coupling a restrictor member includes coupling a restrictor member to each tissue plication.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein forming the tissue plication includes folding tissue on the wall to form multiple layers, and coupling the multiple layers together.

18. A method of treating a patient having an esophagus, a stomach, and a gastro-esophageal junction, the method comprising:

attaching a plurality of discrete restrictor members to a wall of a gastrointestinal tract at or adjacent the gastro-esophageal junction, the plurality of restrictor members collectively being configured to restrict a flow of food from the esophagus into the stomach, the plurality of restrictor members being coupled to the gastrointestinal tract such that an opening between the discrete restrictor members directs the flow of food from the esophagus into the stomach, wherein a size of one or more of the restrictor members controls a size of the opening.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of restriction members are attached to the wall of the gastrointestinal tract using one of sutures or clips.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein each restrictor member of the plurality of restrictor members extends in a direction transverse to a direction of the flow of food from the esophagus into the stomach.
