Method, system, and computer program product for sharing information within a global computer network
View Patent ↗In one embodiment, on a display device, at least one information handling system displays an excerpt of XML-formatted information, and displays a list of folders. In response to a command from a first user, the information handling system saves the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a folder that is selected by the first user from among the displayed list of folders. In response to a command from the first user, the information handling system selectively enables access to the selected folder by one or more second users specified by the first user.
1. A method performed by at least one information handling system having a first storage device maintained at a first remote server, the method comprising:
in response to a first command from a first user, retrieving by the first remote server information, about one or more websites, the one or more websites being hosted on one or more second remote servers different from the first remote server;
providing, by the first remote server, a user terminal with an excerpt of the information in an XML-format to allow the user terminal to access one of the one or more websites for display on a user display device;
transmitting, by the first remote server to the user terminal, a list of folders to simultaneously display on the user display device with the excerpt of the XML-formatted information, the list of folders including at least one of a public folder and a group folder;
in response to a second command from the first user, saving in the first remote server the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a folder that is selected by the first user from among the displayed list of folders; and
in response to a third command from the first user, selectively enabling access to the selected folder including the excerpt of the XML-formatted information, via the first remote server, by one or more second users specified by the first user.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more second users is a single second user preselected by the first user.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more second users is a group of second users preselected by the first user.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively enabling access comprises:
in response to a command from the first user before saving the displayed excerpt, selectively enabling access to the selected folder by the one or more second users specified by the first user.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein selectively enabling access comprises:
in response to a command from the first user after saving the displayed excerpt, selectively enabling access to the selected folder by the one or more second users specified by the first user.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
associating other information with the saved excerpt in the folder, so that access to the saved excerpt includes access to the other information.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the other information has a non-XML format.
8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the other information is a human-readable text message.
9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the other information is a hyperlink to a website.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein saving the displayed excerpt comprises:
saving the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in an XML format.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein displaying the excerpt comprises:
displaying the excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a non-XML format.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-XML format is an HTML format.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selectively enabling access to the selected folder by the one or more second users is provided regardless of whether the first user is online.
14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, from the user terminal, a web page address to retrieve the excerpt of XML-formatted information, about one or more websites, from the first storage device maintained at the first remote server, prior to providing the user terminal with the excerpt of XML-formatted information.
15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
in response to a search term query, providing search results of a list of web pages comprising the queried search term; and
receiving, from the user terminal, a selection of a web page from the list of web pages, prior to providing the user terminal with the excerpt of XML-formatted information.
16. A system, comprising:
at least one information handling system having a first storage device maintained at a first remote server, the at least one information handling system configured to:
in response to a first command from a first user, retrieve by the first remote server information, about one or more websites, the one or more websites being hosted on one or more second remote servers different from the first remote server;
provide, by the first remote server, a user terminal with an excerpt of the information in an XML-format to allow the user terminal to access one of the one or more websites for display on a user display device;
transmit, by the first remote server to the user terminal, a list of folders to simultaneously display on the user display device with the excerpt of the XML-formatted information, the list of folders including at least one of a public folder and a group folder;
in response to a second command from a first user, save in the first remote server the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a folder that is selected by the first user from among the displayed list of folders; and
in response to a third command from the first user, selectively enable access to the selected folder including the excerpt of the XML-formatted information, via the first remote server by one or more second users specified by the first user.
17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more second users is a single second user preselected by the first user.
18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more second users is a group of second users preselected by the first user.
19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the information handling system is further configured to:
in response to a command from the first user before saving the displayed excerpt, selectively enable access to the selected folder by the one or more second users specified by the first user.
20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the information handling system is further configured to:
in response to a command from the first user after saving the displayed excerpt, selectively enable access to the selected folder by the one or more second users specified by the first user.
21. The system of claim 16 , wherein the information handling system is further configured to:
associate other information with the saved excerpt in the folder, so that access to the saved excerpt includes access to the other information.
22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the other information has a non-XML format.
23. The system of claim 21 , wherein the other information is a human-readable text message.
24. The system of claim 21 , wherein the other information is a hyperlink to a website.
25. The system of claim 16 , wherein the information handling system is further configured to:
save the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in an XML format.
26. The system of claim 16 , wherein the information handling system is further configured to:
display the excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a non-XML format.
27. The system of claim 26 , wherein the non-XML format is an HTML format.
28. A computer readable medium having stored thereon a set of instructions, which when executed by a computer having a processor and a memory, cause the computer to perform operations, the operations comprising:
in response to a first command from a first user, retrieving by the first remote server information, about one or more websites, the one or more websites being hosted on one or more second remote servers different from the first remote server;
providing, by the first remote server, a user terminal with an excerpt of the information in an XML-format to allow the user terminal to access one of the one or more websites for display on a user display device;
transmitting, by the first remote server to the user terminal, a list of folders to simultaneously display on the user display device with the excerpt of the XML-formatted information, the list of folders including at least one of a public folder and a group folder;
in response to a second command from the first user, saving in the first remote server the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a folder that is selected by the first user from among the displayed list of folders; and
in response to a third command from the first user, selectively enabling access to the selected folder including the excerpt of the XML-formatted information, via the first remote server, by one or more second users specified by the first user.
29. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the one or more second users is a single second user preselected by the first user.
30. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the one or more second users is a group of second users preselected by the first user.
31. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the operations further comprise:
in response to a command from the first user before saving the displayed excerpt, selectively enabling access to the selected folder by the one or more second users specified by the first user.
32. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the operations further comprise:
in response to a command from the first user after saving the displayed excerpt, selectively enabling access to the selected folder by the one or more second users specified by the first user.
33. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the operations further comprise:
associating other information with the saved excerpt in the folder, so that access to the saved excerpt includes access to the other information.
34. The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein the other information has a non-XML format.
35. The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein the other information is a human-readable text message.
36. The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein the other information is a hyperlink to a website.
37. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the operations further comprise:
saving the displayed excerpt of the XML-formatted information in an XML format.
38. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the operations further comprise:
displaying the excerpt of the XML-formatted information in a non-XML format.
39. The computer readable medium of claim 38 , wherein the non-XML format is an HTML format.
