Abstract

A content on demand system includes logic to compose information about multiple audio and/or video streams into an audio and/or video stream format, and logic to communicate the information about multiple audio and/or video streams to a plurality of set top boxes.

Claims (22)

1. A content on demand system comprising:

circuitry and program instructions implementing a content manager configured to compose an index of information about multiple audio video streams into an audio video stream format; and

circuitry and program instructions implementing a content server configured to communicate the index of information about multiple audio video streams to a plurality of set top boxes; and configured to deliver simultaneously a valid version of the index of information about multiple audio video streams on a first tunable index channel and an invalid version of the index of information about multiple audio video streams on a second tunable index channel, the first tunable index channel and second tunable index channel are part of a same virtual channel group; and

wherein a set top box of the plurality of set top boxes comprises:

circuitry and program instructions configured to read the index of information about multiple audio video streams from the second tunable index channel, and

detect if the second tunable index channel comprises an invalid index of information about the audio video streams and if so tune to the first tunable index channel comprising a valid version of the index of information about the audio video streams.

2. The content on demand system of claim 1 , wherein the index of information about the multiple audio video streams further comprises: content categories assigned to the multiple audio video streams.

3. The content on demand system of claim 1 , wherein the index of information about the multiple audio video streams further comprises: an index of titles assigned to the multiple audio video streams.

4. The content on demand system of claim 1 , further comprising:

circuitry and program instructions implementing a metadata server configured to receive a request to stream an audio video stream, the request to stream an audio video stream comprising an identifier of a title of the audio video stream.

5. A device comprising:

circuitry and program instructions configured to tune to an index channel comprising an index of information about available audio video streams, the index of information about available audio video streams having an audio video stream format;

circuitry and program instructions configured to read the index of information about available audio video streams from the index channel, and configured to apply the index of information about available audio video streams to identify one or more metadata channels comprising metadata describing the available audio video streams; and

circuitry and program instructions configured to detect if the index channel comprises an invalid index of information about available audio video streams and if so to tune to an alternate simultaneously streaming channel comprising the index of information about available audio video streams in the audio video stream format, and to read the index of information about available audio video streams from the alternate simultaneously streaming channel, the index channel and the alternate simultaneously streaming channel parts of a same virtual channel group.

6. The device of claim 5 , further comprising:

circuitry and program instructions configured to tune to the metadata channels, and to read and display the metadata describing the available audio video streams from the metadata channels having the audio video stream format.

7. A set top box comprising:

circuitry and program instructions configured to read a service group identifier for the set top box from a set top box configuration data channel having an audio video stream format;

circuitry and program instructions configured to read from a metadata index channel having the audio video stream format a metadata channel number for a metadata channel comprising titles of available audio video streams;

circuitry and program instructions configured to tune to the metadata channel and enable selection of an audio video stream to request from the titles of available audio video streams;

circuit and program instructions configured to form a request for the audio video stream to request comprising a title of the audio video stream to request and the service group identifier for the set top box and to communicate the request for the audio video stream to request to an on-demand audio video stream server system; and

circuitry and program instructions to tune an alternate metadata index channel having the audio video stream format if the metadata index channel comprises an indication of invalid index data.
