Abstract

The invention is directed to a method of selectively coating wood composites in a single step, while maintaining registration of the coating to the design of the molded or contoured wood composite. The invention also is directed to a structure provided by preparing a wood composite according to the inventive method.

Claims (15)

1. A semi-finished wood composite structure comprising:

a) a wood composite substrate;

b) one or more die-cut foil pieces uniformly coating at least one portion of a surface of the wood composite, said die-cut foil pieces comprising a removable carrier film with a transferable film thereon; and

c) an overlaying foil uniformly coating the surface of the wood composite and said die-cut foil pieces, said overlaying foil comprising a removable carrier film with a transferable film thereon.

2. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the wood composite possesses a smooth surface.

3. The structure of claim 2 , wherein the wood composite possesses an embossed grain pattern.

4. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the wood composite possesses a textured surface.

5. The structure of claim 4 , wherein the wood composite possesses an embossed grain pattern.

6. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the wood composite is a molded wood composite, post-molded wood composite, or semi-molded wood composite.

7. The structure of claim 6 , wherein the wood composite included both flat surface portions and contoured surface portions.

8. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the overlaying foil has been removed from the portion(s) covered by one or more die-cut foil pieces.

9. The structure of claim 6 , wherein the wood composite is a fiberboard.

10. The structure of claim 9 , wherein the fiberboard is selected from the group consisting of hardboard and medium density fiberboard.

11. The structure of claim 6 , wherein the molded wood composite has a thickness of about ⅛-inch to about 1⅝-inches.

12. The structure of claims 11 , wherein the molded wood composite has a thickness of about ⅛-inch to about ½-inch.
