Media printer for continuous printing of different documents
View Patent ↗A printer is provided with a buffer to receive document data. Document data is read from the buffer by a control system and information is printed by one or more printhead assemblies in accordance with document data read by the control system from the buffer. The printer operates to print a first set of document data whilst simultaneously receiving second document data. Thus different documents may be printed without pausing.
1. An inkjet type printer including:
a printhead assembly having at least two printhead modules for printing onto media, the printhead assembly configured to extend substantially across the width of the media relative to the direction of media travel;
a conveyor for conveying the media past the printhead assembly;
a control system for the printhead assembly, the control system having at least one physically and logically distinct control module associated with each printhead module;
at least one input for receiving document data;
a buffer for storing the document data, the buffer having at least one logically distinct memory module associated with each printhead module; such that,
each of the control modules retrieves data from the memory module associated with the corresponding printhead module so that it prints information corresponding to data so retrieved; wherein during use, the printhead assembly prints at least one document corresponding to first document data stored in the buffer whilst simultaneously receiving, via the at least one input, and storing, in the buffer, second document data, the buffer being sized such that the printhead assembly prints without interruption.
2. The printer of claim 1 wherein the buffer stores more than two sets of document data.
3. The printer of claim 1 including at least one printhead assembly that prints on one surface of the media and at least one printhead assembly that prints on a second surface of the media.
4. The printer of claim 1 wherein the conveyor conveys the media past the at least one printhead assembly at a substantially constant speed.
5. The printer of claim 1 wherein the media is continuous.
6. The printer of claim 1 wherein each printhead assembly includes at least two printhead modules arranged end on the end across the width of the media.
7. The printer of claim 1 wherein said the buffer includes at least two physically and logically distinct memory modules.
8. The printer of claim 1 wherein the control system includes at least two physically and logically distinct control modules.
9. The printer of claim 1 wherein each printhead module includes two elongate printhead chips assemblies, each of said printhead chip assemblies extending in parallel across the respective section.
10. The printer of claim 1 wherein each control module includes two printer engine control chips.
11. The printer of claim 1 including a serial data connection interconnecting said buffer with said at least one input.
12. The printer of claim 1 having a printable width of about 18.625 inches, each printhead assembly is capable of printing 12 different materials and the buffer is about 32 MB per printable surface.
13. The printer of claim 1 wherein the buffer is about 5772 bytes per color per cm of printable width.
