Abstract

This invention relates to a printer whereby ink is printed by being discharged as dots from a plurality of nozzles by means of pulses. To ensure high quality printed images it is necessary to ensuring that the size of all dots is consistent. Therefore there is provided a method and apparatus whereby before printing of any dots, the temperature of the ink in each nozzle is sensed by Tsense, and a pulse insufficient to fire the ink from the nozzle, yet sufficient to heat up the ink, is fired to each nozzle in the same sequence as the standard print cycle, and the temperature of the ink is sensed. This process is repeated until the required temperature of the ink is reached, and printing is then initiated.

Claims (31)

1. A method of printing using two printheads in communication with each other, each printhead having a plurality of nozzles, each of which discharge ink to produce an ink dot to print the image, comprising the steps of:

loading each nozzle with ink,

sensing the temperature of each printhead;

if the temperature of the printheads is at the required temperature, printing said ink;

if the temperature of one or more of said printheads is below the required temperature, heating the respective printhead by firing a short pulse to each nozzle of the the respective printhead, said pulses being insufficient to discharge ink from the nozzle, but sufficient to heat up the printhead;

sensing the temperature of each printhead;

repeating the steps of heating the printhead and sensing the temperature of each printhead until the required temperature is reached in both printheads; and

printing said image, simultaneously by both printheads.

2. A method of printing according to claim 1 , wherein the steps of firing a short pulse and sensing the temperature of each printhead, is carried out in the same sequence as the sequence of a standard print cycle.

3. A method of printing according to claim 1 wherein the sensing and heating steps are carried out while data is being transferred to the printer.

4. A method of printing according to claim 1 or 2 , wherein the transfer of data on the temperature of the printhead is by Tsense.

5. A method of printing using two printheads, in communication with each other, each printhead having a plurality of nozzles, each of which discharge ink to produce an ink dot to print the image, comprising the steps of:

loading each nozzle with ink,

sensing the temperature of each printhead;

if the temperature of the printheads is at the required temperature, printing said ink;

if the temperature of the one or more of said printheads is below the required temperature, heating the respective printhead by firing a short pulse to each nozzle of the respective printhead, said pulses being insufficient to discharge ink from the nozzle, but sufficient to heat up the respective printhead;

sensing the temperature of each printhead;

repeating the steps of heating the printheads and sensing the temperature of each printhead until the required temperature is reached in both printheads; and

printing said image, by one of said printheads.

6. A method of printing according to claim 5 , wherein the steps of firing a short pulse and sensing the temperature of each printhead, is carried out in the same sequence as the sequence of a standard print cycle.

7. A method of printing according to claim 5 wherein the sensing and heating steps are carried out while data is being transferred to the printer.

8. A method of printing according to claim 5 or 6 , wherein the transfer of data on the temperature of the printhead is by Tsense.

9. A printer having:

a first printhead;

a plurality of ink discharge nozzles in said first printhead;

a second printhead in communication with said first printhead;

pulse generating mechanism to generate a pulse of variable durations to each nozzle of said first and second printheads;

a temperature sensor to sense the temperature of each printhead,

a controller communicating with said temperature sensor and said pulse generator,

whereby, if the temperature of one or more of said printheads is below the required temperature, a short pulse is fired to each nozzle of the respective printhead, heating the respective printhead, said pulses being insufficient to discharge ink from the nozzle, but sufficient to heat up the respective printhead; the controller repeating the steps of heating the printheads and sensing the temperature of each printhead until the required temperature is reached in both printheads; and then the controller initiates the printing of said ink by either said first and second printheads or both simultaneously.

10. A printer according to claim 9 wherein the controller cycles the heating pulses through the nozzles in the same sequence as the standard Print Cycle.
