Abstract

When a printhead is not in use, it remains filled with ink. In order to prevent evaporation of the ink through the nozzles of the printhead, and the consequential depositing of ink components in and around the ink nozzles, the invention provides capping of the nozzle during the non printing modes of the printer. The capping mechanism uses a page width elastomeric seal, which can move between a first capping position, in which it seals said nozzles of the printhead in an air tight manner, and a second position in which the elastomeric seal moves away from said print head to allow paper to be printed upon by said print head.

Claims (7)

1. A capping mechanism for use with a printer assembly in which a print head discharges dots of ink to form an image, comprising

a page width elastomeric seal

a drive unit adapted to move said elastomeric seal between a first position, in which said elastomeric seal seals said printhead in an air tight manner during non printing modes of the printer assembly, and a second positioning in which the elastomeric seal is positioned away from said printhead, during printing modes of the printer, to allow paper to pass through said printer assembly and to allow said print head to print on said paper.

2. A capping mechanism according to claim 1 , including a biasing mechanism to biases said elastomeric seal into its first position.

3. A capping mechanism according to claim 2 wherein the biasing mechanism is a plurality of resilient fingers.

4. A capping mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric seal is located on one end of a lever and a drive is located on the other end of the lever, to move said elastomeric seal between said first and second positions, whereby small movements of the drive cause large movements of the elastomeric seal.

5. A capping mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein an absorbent material is positioned in said capping mechanism to catch ink discharged from said printhead, during non printing modes.
