Abstract

The printer's page description contains a contone layer and a black layer. The black layer is conceptually above the black layer and is composited over the contone layer by the printer. The print driver therefore maintains a page buffer which correspondingly contains a medium-resolution contone layer and a high resolution black layer. It is therefore necessary to determine where an object being placed on the contone layer obscures something on the black layer. When an obscuration occurs the obscured black pixels are composited with the contone layer and removed from the black layer.

Claims (18)

1. A method of printing an image on a page, using a print driver in a PC, and a microelectromechanical printer, comprising the steps of:

determining an image to be printed

generating a device-independent RGB contone images and graphics data layer from said image;

generating a black text and graphics data layer from said image;

determining if there is an black text data obscured by the contone layer,

removing the obscured black text data from the black text layer;

compositing the obscured black text data into the contone layer;

compositing the contone data as an image in a first layer of a printed image;

compositing the black text and graphics data as an image in a second layer over said first layer;

converting device-independent RGB contone images and graphics data to device specific CMYK data and

transferring said device specific CMYK data to a printer.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the contone images and graphics data is generated as a medium resolution background layer and a foreground layer made up of a medium resolution black layer and a high resolution black layer.

3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein the high resolution black layer is at 800 dpi forming a 1-bit opacity bitmap, the medium resolution black layer is at 267 ppi forming an 8-bit opacity bitmap, and the medium resolution background layer is at 267 ppi forming a 24-bit RGB bit map.

4. A halftoner/compositor unit comprising:

an input for an expanded CMYK contone layer;

an input for an expanded black layer;

an output of a bi-level CMYK image and

a clock enable generator which generates enable signals for clocking the CMYK input, the black layer input and the bi-level CMYK image output.
