Abstract

Rotate-and-pull mechanisms for fiber optic modules. The rotate-and-pull mechanisms have a lever-actuator to unlatch and withdraw a fiber optic module from a cage assembly or a module receptacle. The lever-actuator pivotally couples to the fiber optic module so that when lever-actuator is rotated about its pivot point, the lever-actuator causes the second actuator to release the fiber optic module from the cage assembly. The lever-actuator includes an actuating-tab to cause the second actuator to move when the lever-actuator is rotated. By pulling the lever-actuator away from the cage assembly, the fiber optic module is withdrawn from the cage assembly. A belly-to-belly mounting configuration is introduced for the rotate-and-pull release fiber optic modules.

Claims (35)

1. An opto-electronic module capable of being selectively received within a cage receptacle of a system, the module comprising:

a housing forming an interior portion that at least partially encloses a printed circuit board capable of electrically interfacing with the system when the module is operatively received within the cage receptacle;

a latch key; and

a bail latch that is operatively attached to the module so as to be selectively moveable between at least a first position and a second position, the bail latch including,

a tab, the tab capable of causing the latch key to engage the module within the cage receptacle when the bail latch is placed in the first position, and capable of causing the latch key to disengage the module within the cage receptacle when the bail latch is placed in the second position, and

a pulling arm configured to allow removal of the module from the cage receptacle when the bail latch is in the second position by applying a pulling force to the pulling arm.

2. The opto-electronic module of claim 1 , wherein the latch key is disposed on a pivot-arm actuator that is rotated about a pivoting pin by the tab.

3. The opto-electronic module of claim 1 , further comprising: a nose receptacle disposed at an end of the module, the nose receptacle capable of physically receiving and interfacing with a corresponding connector.

4. The opto-electronic module of claim 3 , wherein the connector is a fiber optic cable connector.

5. The opto-electronic module of claim 3 , wherein the bail latch is prevented from being moved from the first position to the second position when the connector is received within the nose receptacle.

6. The opto-electronic module of claim 1 , further comprising: means for biasing the latch key to engage the module within the cage receptacle.

7. The opto-electronic module of claim 6 , wherein the means for biasing includes a spring.

8. An opto-electronic module comprising:

a frame having a male electrical connector at a first end that is capable of interfacing with a system when the module is operatively received within a cage receptacle, and a second end having a nose receptacle capable of physically receiving and interfacing with a corresponding cable connector;

a latching mechanism that selectively latches the module within the cage receptacle; and

a moveable bail that is operatively attached to the nose receptacle, wherein selective movement of the moveable bail to a first predetermined position operates the latching mechanism so as to unlatch the module from within the cage receptacle and allow its extraction from the cage receptacle

wherein the latching mechanism includes:

a pivot arm actuator:

a latch key disposed at one end of the pivot arm actuator; and

a tab formed along a portion of the moveable bail, wherein selective movement of the moveable bail to a second predetermined position causes the tab to exert a force against the pivot arm actuator that causes the latch key to engage with a catch formed within the cage receptacle when the module is received within the cage receptacle.

9. The opto-electronic module of claim 8 , wherein the module is an opto-electronic transceiver, and the cable connector is an optical cable connector.

10. The opto-electronic module of claim 8 further comprising: means for biasing the latching mechanism to latch the module within the cage receptacle.

11. The opto-electronic module of claim 10 , wherein the means for biasing includes a spring.

12. An opto-electronic transceiver module capable of being selectively received within a cage receptacle of a system, the module comprising:

a frame that supports a printed circuit board capable of electrically interfacing with the system when the module is operatively received within the cage receptacle;

a nose receptacle capable of physically receiving and interfacing with a corresponding optical communications connector;

a housing forming an interior portion that at least partially encloses the frame;

a pivot arm actuator, the pivot arm actuator being rotatably supported by the frame about a pivoting pin;

a latch key disposed at a first end of the pivot arm actuator, and a boss formed at a second end of the pivot arm actuator; and

a bail latch having a tab, the tab being operatively engaged with the boss so that movement of the bail latch causes rotation of the pivot arm actuator about a pivoting pin and corresponding movement of the latch key to a latched or an unlatched position.

13. The opto-electronic transceiver module of claim 12 , wherein the latch key is prevented from being moved from the unlatched position when the optical communications connector is received within the nose receptacle.

14. The opto-electronic transceiver module of claim 12 , wherein the bail includes a pulling arm that forms a lever capable of removing the module from the cage receptacle by exerting a pulling force on the pulling arm when the latch key is in the unlatched position.

15. The opto-electronic transceiver module of claim 12 , wherein the bail includes a pulling arm through which passes the optical communications connector when the connector is operatively received within the nose receptacle.

16. The opto-electronic transceiver module of claim 12 , further comprising: means for biasing the latch key to the latched position.

17. The opto-electronic transceiver module of claim 16 , wherein the means for biasing includes a spring.
