Abstract

A method and apparatus is provided that establishes user accounts that automatically forward a user's e-mail to the user's pre-selected forwarding e-mail address(es). Each user creates a forwarding directory, which may comprise multiple e-mail accounts, that the user activates and deactivates as needed.

Claims (39)

1. A method of bouncing electronic messages comprising the steps of:

storing secondary account information for a primary account in a bounce database;

receiving an electronic message addressed to a primary account;

retrieving secondary account information corresponding to said primary account from said database, said secondary account information including instructions to forward electronic messages addressed to said primary account to a cache for at least one secondary account, said instructions remaining effective until another forwarding destination is provided for the at least one secondary account; and

forwarding said electronic message to the cache.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the cache stores said electronic message for the at least one secondary account during a period when a user is unable to access the secondary account.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said at least one secondary account comprises a first account and a second account.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said first account is an e-mail account and said second account is a non-internet account.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein said secondary account is associated with a device selected from the group comprising: a pager, a cellular phone, a digital phone, a satellite phone, a facsimile machine, a voicemail account, and a personal digital assistant.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

retrieving said electronic message from said cache when said secondary account is accessed by a user via an electronic mail retrieving device.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said electronic mail retrieving device comprises one of a computer, a pager, a cellular phone, a digital phone, a satellite phone, a facsimile machine, a voicemail account, and a personal digital assistant.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of retrieving is performed when the user checks into a hotel associated with the secondary account.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of retrieving is performed when the user disembarks a plane.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of retrieving is performed automatically when the electronic mail retrieving device changes from a non-operational state to an operational state.

11. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 2 .

12. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 3 .

13. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 4 .

14. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 5 .

15. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 6 .

16. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 7 .

17. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 8 .

18. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 9 .

19. A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the method of claim 10 .

20. A system for bouncing electronic messages comprising:

a storage medium configured to secondary account information for a primary account in a bounce database;

a receiver configured to receive an electronic message addressed to said primary account;

a retrieving mechanism configured to retrieve secondary account information corresponding to said primary account from said database, said secondary account information including instructions to forward electronic messages addressed to said primary account to a cache for at least one secondary account, said instructions remaining effective until another forwarding destination is provided for the at least one secondary account; and

a forwarding mechanism configured to forward said electronic message to the cache.

21. The system of claim 20 wherein the cache stores said electronic message for the at least one secondary account during a period when a user is unable to access the secondary account.

22. The system of claim 20 wherein said at least one secondary account comprises a first account and a second account.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein said first account is an e-mail account and said second account is a non-internet account.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein said secondary account is associated with a device selected from the group comprising: a pager, a cellular phone, a digital phone, a satellite phone, a facsimile machine, a voicemail account, and a personal digital assistant.

25. The system of claim 20 further comprising:

a mechanism configured to retrieve said electronic message from said cache when said secondary account is accessed by a user via an electronic mail retrieving device.

26. The system of claim 25 wherein said electronic mail retrieving device comprises one of a computer, a pager, a cellular phone, a digital phone, a satellite phone, a facsimile machine, a voicemail account, and a personal digital assistant.

27. The system of claim 25 wherein said retrieving mechanism is configured to retrieve when the user checks into a hotel associated with the secondary account.

28. The system of claim 25 wherein said retrieving mechanism is configured to retrieve when the user disembarks a plane.

29. The system of claim 25 wherein said retrieving mechanism is configured to retrieve automatically when the electronic mail retrieving device changes from a non-operational state to an operational state.
