Abstract

The present invention discloses the protease hepsin is specifically over-expressed in ovarian and other malignancies. A number of hepsin peptides can induce immune responses to hepsin, thereby demonstrating the potential of these peptides in monitoring and the development of immunotherapies for ovarian and other malignancies. There is also provided a hepsin protein variant that is useful as a marker for ovarian cancer cells, prostate cancer cells or kidney cancer cells.

Claims (4)

1. A method of detecting the presence of one or more of ovarian cancer, prostate cancer or kidney cancer in a subject, comprising:

obtaining a ovarian, prostate, or kidney tumor sample from said subject and a corresponding ovarian, prostate, or kidney tissue control sample from a normal tissue obtained from a healthy individual;

detecting a mRNA encoding hepsin protein variant consisting of the amino acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO. 195 in said subject sample and in said control sample; and

comparing a level of the subject sample mRNA with a level of corresponding mRNA in the control sample, wherein a higher level of said mRNA in said subject sample as compared to said control sample indicates presence of one or more of ovarian cancer, prostate cancer or kidney cancer in said subject.
