Abstract

Methods and apparatus for treatment of patent foramen ovale (PFO) generally involve use of a catheter having at least one closure device at its distal end. In some embodiments, the catheter also includes one or more energy transmission members for delivering energy to the closure device(s) and to the tissue adjacent the PFO to induce closure of the PFO. Closure devices may comprise, for example, a bioresorbable matrix or a non-resorbable matrix. In some embodiments, the closure device contains particles dispersed within the closure device to increase conductance and/or to reduce resistance and/or impedance. An exemplary method involves advancing a catheter to position its distal end into the tunnel of the PFO and fixing the closure device within the tunnel of the patent foramen PFO.

Claims (16)

1. A method of treating a patent foramen ovale, the method comprising:

advancing a closure device near a distal end of a catheter device to tissue of the patent foramen ovale; and

applying energy to the closure device to cause adhesion between the closure device and tissue of the patent foramen ovale, thereby fixing die closure device to tissue of the patent foramen ovale.

2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein bipolar radiofrequency energy is used to cause adhesion of the closure device to the tissue.

3. A method as in claim 1 , wherein monopolar radiofrequency energy is used to cause adhesion of the closure device to the tissue.

4. A method as is claim 1 , wherein applying energy to the closure device comprises applying energy to at least one bioresorbable element.

5. A method as is claim 1 , wherein applying energy to the closure device comprises applying energy to at least one non-resorbable element.

6. A method as in claim 5 , wherein the energy is applied to a closure device comprising at least one of a tissue adhesive and a tissue solder.

7. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the closure device is advanced such that no part of the closure device extends into the left atrium.

8. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising applying lateral force to the patent foramen ovale with the closure device.

9. A method as in claim 8 , further comprising applying dilatory force to the patent foramen ovale during closure.

10. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the energy is applied via at least one energy transmission member disposed near the distal end of the catheter.

11. A method as in claim 1 , wherein applying energy comprises applying resistive heating, ultrasound, microwave or laser energy.

12. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the energy is applied through a conductive or low-resistance plane of the closure device.

13. A method as in claim 5 , further including expanding an expandable balloon member near the distal end of the catheter to deploy the closure device to tissue of the patent foramen ovale.

14. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the closure device is advanced into the tunnel of a patent foramen ovale.
