Abstract

An access switch includes at least one cable modem termination system. The cable modem termination system (CMTS), when coupled to a hybrid-fiber coaxial cable network, is in communication with a media terminal adapter. The CMTS includes a multimedia service subsystem and a data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) subsystem having at least one user configurable parameter. The access switch further includes a network interface module, in communication with the CMTS, that, when the network interface module is coupled to a network, communicates DOCSIS flows between the network and the CMTS. The access switch further includes a management module that, when the access switch is coupled to a management application, receives configuration data to configure the DOCSIS subsystem. When the DOCSIS subsystem is configured, the multimedia subsystem automatically provides multimedia service without additional configuration thereof.

Claims (22)

1 . An access switch comprising:

at least one cable modem termination system, wherein the cable modem termination system, when coupled to a hybrid-fiber coaxial cable network, is in communication with a media terminal adapter, wherein the cable modem termination system includes a multimedia service subsystem and a data over cable service interface specification subsystem having at least one user configurable parameter;

a network interface module, in communication with the cable modem termination system, that, when the network interface module is coupled to a network, communicates data over cable service interface specification flows between the network and the cable modem termination system; and

a management module that, when the access switch is coupled to a management application, receives configuration data to configure the data over cable service interface specification subsystem;

wherein when the data over cable service interface specification subsystem is configured, the multimedia subsystem automatically provides multimedia service without additional configuration thereof.

2 . The access switch of claim 1 , wherein the network includes a managed internet protocol network.

3 . The access switch of claim 1 , wherein the data over cable service interface specification subsystem includes a quality of service policy manager that performs admission control for flows associated with gates managed by the gate manager.

4 . The access switch of claim 1 , wherein the multimedia service subsystem includes a packet cable service subsystem.

5 . The access switch of claim 4 , wherein the packet cable subsystem includes a gate manager.

6 . The access switch of claim 5 , further comprising a route server having a common open policy service client executing thereon that receives with a call management server included in the network and the gate manager;

when a first common open policy service message that includes a gate command is received by the network module, the first common open policy service message is forwarded to the common open policy service client and the common open policy service client sends a second message derived from the first common open policy service message to the gate manager; and

wherein the gate manager receives the second message and processes the gate command.

7 . A cable modem termination system comprising:

a multimedia service subsystem; and

a data over cable service interface specification subsystem having at least one user configurable parameter; and

wherein when the data over cable service interface specification subsystem is configured, the multimedia subsystem automatically provides multimedia service without additional configuration thereof.

8 . The cable modem termination system of claim 7 , wherein the data over cable service interface specification subsystem includes a quality of service policy manager that performs admission control for flows associated with gates managed by the gate manager.

9 . The cable modem termination system of claim 7 , wherein the multimedia service subsystem includes a packet cable service subsystem.

10 . The cable modem termination system of claim 9 , wherein the packet cable subsystem includes a gate manager.

11 . The cable modem termination system of claim 10 , when the cable modem termination system is inserted into an access switch having a route server that includes a common open policy service client executing thereon that, when coupled to a network, communicates with a call management server included in the network and with the gate manager;

wherein, when a first common open policy service message that includes a gate command is received by the common open policy service client, the common open policy service client sends a second message derived from the first common open policy service message to the gate manager; and

wherein the gate manager receives the second message and processes the gate command.
