System and method for notification of digital images to be shared via a service provider
View Patent ↗A method and system for organizing and sharing digital images over a communication network wherein an image server at a service provider stores digital images for a customer which may have more two more electronic addresses which may receive e-mail. The server automatically forwarding all electronic mail having an address from one of the registered two or more electronic addresses to the primary electronic address that is received over a communication network. The e-mail includes a link to the share images and/or images folder.
1. A method for automatically sharing digital images over a communication network, comprising the steps of:
a service provider providing an owner account for storing the digital images on a server on behalf of said owner and for accessing the account over the communication network;
said server receiving digital images over said communication network from two or more individual users other than said owner who have been given write access by the owner for placement of digital images in said owner account;
said server sending a single electronic notification over said communication network to said owner that new digital images from said two or more users other than said owner have been placed in a folder of the owner account;
sending a message to another individual from the server inviting said individual to become a subscriber to said folder for accessing said digital image placed in said folder;
selectively controlling access to said folder by said subscriber including providing to the subscriber a subscriber account that, if so selected by the owner, included a permission level limiting the subscriber's access to the digital images or that, if so selected by the owner, includes a permission level that does not limit the subscriber's access to the digital images; and
sending said notification based on a predetermined criterion wherein said predetermined criterion comprises a defined number of sources.
2. A method according to claim 1 wherein said predetermined criterion further comprises a defined period of time.
3. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of automatically notifying said subscriber when the new digital images are placed in said folder.
4. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of said permission level controlling whether said subscriber may read or write comments with respect to said digital images.
5. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of said subscriber providing contact information for receiving notices that may be sent with respect to said folder.
6. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of organizing said digital images in said folder in accordance with a second criterion.
7. A method according to claim 6 wherein said second criterion is selected from the following group:
a date that the digital images were captured or stored in the folder;
a rating of the digital images by popularity, type of content, or number of times accessed;
a keyword;
an author or owner of the digital images;
a location where the images were taken; or
a feature of the digital image.
8. A method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of including a thumbnail representation of each of the new digital images in the notification.
9. A system for automatically sharing digital images over a communication network, comprising the steps of:
a server of a service provider for storing the digital images in a customer account on behalf of said customer and for allowing access to said digital images over the communication network;
said server receiving the digital images over said communication network from two or more individual users other than said customer who have been given write access by the customer for placement of digital images in said customer account;
said server sending a single electronic notification over said communication network to said customer account that the digital images from said two or more users other than said customer have been placed in a folder of the customer account, wherein said notification is sent based on a predetermined criterion comprising a defined number of sources; and
said server sending a message to another individual inviting said individual to become a subscriber to said folder for accessing digital images placed in said folder, wherein said customer account includes one of a plurality of permission levels issued by the server for controlling access to said folder by said subscriber.
10. A system according to claim 9 wherein said predetermined criterion further comprises a defined period of time.
11. A system according to claim 9 wherein said one of a plurality of permission levels comprises automatically notifying said subscriber when new digital images are placed in said folder.
12. A system according to claim 9 wherein said one of a plurality of permission levels comprises controlling whether said subscriber may read or write comments with respect to said digital images.
13. A system according to claim 9 wherein said subscriber can provide contact information where said subscriber may receive notices that may be sent with respect to said folder.
14. A system according to claim 9 wherein said digital images in said folder are organized in accordance with a particular criterion.
