Abstract

A method and a system map a geographic location to a network address. At least one automated process is performed to identify a geographic location for the network address. A determination is made whether the automated process provided satisfactory geographic location information for the network address. If the automated process did not provided satisfactory geographic location information for the network address, then the network address is forwarded for manual resolution.

Claims (41)

1. A method comprising:

collecting geographic location information associated with a network address on an internet protocol (IP) network, the geographic location information being collected from a plurality of data collection agents being configured to individually perform at least one data collection operation in the IP network and launch first and second traceroutes from respective first and second collection agents of the plurality of data collection agents;

communicating with the plurality of data collection agents utilizing a data collection broker; and

utilizing the geographic location information to associate a geographic location with the network address in the IP network.

2. The method of claim 1 , including deploying the plurality of data collection agents at a plurality of respective and separate service providers.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collecting of the geographic location information includes performing a plurality of traceroute operations with respect to the network address.

4. The method of claim 1 , including utilizing the data collection broker to determine which data collection agents of the plurality of data collection agents are most appropriate for the collecting of the geographic location information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of data collection agents is to advise the data collection broker regarding a success or a failure of a search conducted to collect the geographic location information.

6. The method of claim 1 , including utilizing the data collection broker to control the at least one data collection operation performed by each of the plurality of data collection agents.

7. The method of claim 1 , including, utilizing the data collection broker to store the geographic location information within a collection database.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of data collection agents is capable of performing a plurality of data collection operations.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second traceroutes is with respect to the network address.

10. The method of claim 9 , including computing a similarity of the results of the first and second traceroutes to generate a confidence factor for the geographic location associated with the network address.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the association of the geographic location with the network address includes determining whether each of the first and second traceroutes proceeds through a common set of routers.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the association of the geographic location with the network address includes determining that each of the first and second traceroutes terminates at or approximate the geographic location.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the association of the geographic location with the network address includes extrapolating a direction indication for the geographic location utilizing knowledge of locations of routers in each of the first and second traceroutes.

14. The method of claim 11 , including extrapolating a plurality of direction indications utilizing the knowledge of the locations of the routers in each of the first and second traceroutes, and identifying the geographic location utilizing the plurality of direction indications.

15. A system comprising:

a plurality of data collection agents being deployable in an internet protocol (IP) network, each of the plurality of data collection agents being configured to individually perform at least one data collection operation to collect geographic location information associated with a network address in the IP network and launch first and second traceroutes from respective first and second collection agents of the plurality of data collection agents;

a data collection broker to communicate with the plurality of data collection agents; and

an analysis module to associate a geographic location with the network address in the IP network utilizing the collected geographic location information.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the plurality of data collection agents is to collect the geographic location information by performing a plurality of traceroute operations with respect to the network address.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the data collection broker is to determine which data collection agents of the plurality of data collection agents are most appropriate for the collecting of the geographic location information.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein each of the plurality of data collection agents is to advise the data collection broker regarding a success or a failure of a search conducted to collect the geographic location information.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the analysis module being configured to generate confidence data related to the association of the geographic location with the network address.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the plurality of data collection agents is configured to perform a plurality of data collection operations.

21. The system of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the plurality of data collection agents is configured to locally store the geographic location information, collected utilizing one or more searches, and to batch update the data collection broker utilizing the locally stored geographic location information.

22. The system of claim 15 , wherein each of the first and second traceroutes is with respect to the network address.

23. The system of claim 15 , including computing a similarity of the results of the first and second traceroutes to generate a confidence factor for the geographic location associated with the network address.

24. The system of claim 15 , wherein the association of the geographic location with the network address includes determining whether each of the first and second traceroutes proceeds through a common set of routers.

25. The system of claim 15 , wherein the association of the geographic location with the network address includes determining that each of the first and second traceroutes terminates at or approximate the geographic location.

26. The system of claim 15 , wherein the association of the geographic location with the network address includes extrapolating a direction indication for the geographic location, utilizing knowledge of locations of routers in each of the first and second traceroutes.

27. The system of claim 24 , including extrapolating a plurality of direction indications utilizing the knowledge of the locations of the routers in each of the first and second traceroutes, and identifying the geographic location utilizing the plurality of direction indications.

28. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium for storing a set of instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:

collect geographic location information associated with a network address on an internet protocol (IP) network, the geographic location information being collected from a plurality of data collection agents being configured to individually perform at least one data collection operation in the IP network and launch first and second traceroutes from respective first and second collection agents of the plurality of data collection agents;

communicate with the plurality of data collection agents utilizing a data collection broker; and

utilize the geographic location information to associate a geographic location with the network address in the IP network.

29. A system comprising:

a plurality of data collection means being deployable in an internet protocol (IP) network, each of the plurality of data collection means being configured to individually perform at least one data collection operation to collect geographic location information associated with a network address in the IP network and launch first and second traceroutes from respective first and second collection agents of the plurality of data collection agents;

a data collection broker means to communicate with the plurality of data collection means; and

an analysis means to associate a geographic location with the network address in the IP network utilizing the collected geographic location information.
