Abstract

A system and method for emulating a telephone driver of a mobile device to assist in the development and testing of mobile telephony applications is described. An emulated telephony driver maintains internal states of a wireless network and characteristics of the mobile device. A wireless network is simulated such that neither a cellular radio nor a mobile subscription are required for handset application development and testing.

Claims (18)

1. A system for emulating a telephony driver to test an application for use with a mobile device, comprising:

an application layer that is arranged to store the application to be tested;

a cellular core coupled to the application layer, that is arranged to receive a command associated with the application to be tested from the application layer; and

an emulation telephony driver (ETD) coupled to the cellular core, the ETD being configured to perform the following actions:

receiving the command from the cellular core;

translating the command to a network request;

modeling a response to the network request; and

returning the response to the cellular core and the application layer, wherein the response indicates whether the network request was successful,

wherein software code associated with the application is changed in the application layer when the network request is not successful, wherein the software code is changed based on the response.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the response is a response expected from a wireless network.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the application layer comprises a user interface, the response being returned to the user interface.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD simulates a wireless network by maintaining network features supported by the application to be tested.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD comprises a control interface that is arranged to change a network feature associated with the application to be tested in the ETD.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD comprises a control interface tat is arranged to configure the ETD such that the application can be tested using network fault injection.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD comprises a configuration interface that is arranged to configure the ETD to support a network feature associated with the application to be tested.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD comprises a network emulation module that is arranged to simulate problems and. configurations associated with a wireless network.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD comprises a handset emulation module that is arranged to store information associated with a handset of the mobile device.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ETD comprises a telephony server emulation module that is arranged to emulate dialing a phone call.
