Abstract

Upon a substrate subsequent layers of elastic ink are jetted using an ink jet printing system. Each layer is immobilised by a immobilisation step before jetting the following layer. A printing relief is gradually formed to obtain a flexographic printing plate allowing accurate control over the relief and slopes of the printing plates. Use can be made of different inks or immobilisation step to obtain different layer characteristics. Inks can be immobilised using UV curing. The recorded relief of the layers can be measured and corrections can be applied using a feed-back loop. A rejuvenation process for printing plates can be constructed using the described method. An elastic base layer can be provided on the substrate to provide better plate characteristics.

Claims (35)

1. A method for making a flexographic printing plate using an inkjet printing system comprising the steps of:

applying at least a first image-wise layer of ink on a substrate with drops of ink from the inkjet printing system;

immobilizing by radiation curing the drops of ink of the first image-wise layer, wherein the time between the applying and the immobilizing each of the drops of ink in the first image-wise layer of ink is less than 10 seconds;

controlling a print head of the inkjet printing system to keep a distance from the print head to a top recording surface that receives the drops of ink constant;

applying at least a second image-wise layer with drops of ink on the first image-wise layer of ink after the step of immobilizing the first image-wise layer; and

immobilizing by radiation curing the drops of ink of the second image-wise layer, wherein the time between the applying and the immobilizing each of the drops of ink in the second image-wise layer is less than 10 seconds; wherein

the at least a first image-wise layer and the at least a second image-wise layer form a relief on the substrate containing at least one dot including a top print area and a side having a non-linear slope with respect to a vertical direction perpendicular to the substrate thereby obtaining the flexographic printing plate, the non-linear slope of the side providing sufficient physical support for the at least one dot during a flexographic printing process.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the ink in the step of applying the first image-wise layer has a different composition from the ink in the step of applying the second image-wise layer.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of immobilizing the first image-wise layer has a different immobilizing time than the step of immobilizing the second image-wise layer.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of immobilizing the first image-wise layer has at least one of a different intensity of curing radiation, a different exposure time to curing radiation, or a different wavelength of curing radiation than the step of immobilizing the second image-wise layer.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the ink used in each of the applying steps is UV radiation curable, and each of the immobilizing steps include delivering UV radiation by a UV source.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein wavelengths outside of the UV spectrum are filtered out to avoid heating of the substrate.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

cooling the substrate during at least one of the applying and immobilizing steps.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

measuring a height of at least the first image-wise layer thereby generating measurement data.

9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising the step of:

feeding back the measurement data to a feed-back loop to adjust image content of at least the second image-wise layer.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the substrate is a used flexographic printing plate, and the method further comprises the step of:

feeding back the measurement data to the feed-back loop to adjust the image content of at least the second image-wise layer in order to re-apply worn out portions of the used flexographic printing plate.

11. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

controlling image content of at least one of the first and second image-wise layers to control the slope of the side of the at least one dot.

12. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

applying an overall oleophobic coating layer over the relief formed on the substrate; and

removing the oleophobic coating from an area on top of the relief to reveal the underlying relief.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the substrate includes an elastomeric base layer arranged to receive at least the first and second image-wise layers of ink, and further comprising the step of:

providing physical separations in the elastomeric base layer such that the elastomeric base layer includes areas having no lateral cohesion wherein compression of the flexographic printing plate in one area does not also cause compression of the flexographic printing plate in a nearby area.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the inkjet printing system is a multilevel inkjet printing system that jets drops of ink having a variable but controllable volume.

15. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

finally curing at least the first and second image-wise layers using UVA radiation having a wavelength from 320 nm to 400 nm.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one dot includes an upper portion having a linear side defining a first angle with respect to the vertical direction and a bottom portion having a linear side defining a second angle with respect to the vertical direction, the second angle being different from the first angle.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein the linear side of the upper portion is a vertical section such that the first angle is 0° with respect to the vertical direction.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the time between the applying and the immobilizing a drop of ink is less than one second for the first and second image-wise layers of ink.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a sleeve sized to fit over a drum.

20. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the relief contains at least one other dot also including a top print area and a side having a constant slope from the top print area of the at least one other dot to a bottom of the at least one other dot and defining an angle with respect to the vertical direction.
