Abstract

The invention is directed toward methods of using alkali-containing catalysts for generation of hydrogen-rich gas at temperatures of less than about 260° C. A WGS catalyst of the invention may have the following composition: a) at least one of Pt, Ru, their oxides and mixtures thereof; b) Na, its oxides or mixtures thereof; and optionally, c) Li, its oxides and mixtures thereof. The catalysts may be supported on a variety of catalyst support materials. The invention is also directed toward catalysts that exhibit both high activity and selectivity to hydrogen generation and carbon monoxide oxidation.

Claims (29)

1. A method for producing a hydrogen-rich gas which comprises:

contacting a carbon monoxide containing gas with a water gas shift catalyst in the presence of water at a temperature of less than about 260° C.,

wherein the water gas shift catalyst consists essentially of:

a) Pt, its oxides or mixtures thereof; and

b) Na, its oxides or mixtures thereof.

2. method according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is a syngas.

3. method according to claim 1 , wherein the water gas shift catalyst is supported on a carrier comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, titania, ceria, magnesia, lanthania, niobia, yttria and iron oxide, and mixtures thereof.

4. A method according to claim 3 , wherein the alumina is doped with Zr.

5. A method according to claim 3 , wherein the carrier comprises zirconia.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is contacted with the water gas shift catalyst at a pressure of no more than about 50 bar.

7. A method according to claim 6 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is contacted with the water gas shift catalyst at a pressure of no more than about 15 bar.

8. A method according to claim 6 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is contacted with the water gas shift catalyst at a pressure of no more than about 1 bar.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the water gas shift catalyst comprises about 0.05 wt. % to about 10 wt. %, with respect to the total weight of all catalyst components plus the support material, of Pt present in the water gas shift catalyst.

10. A method according to claim 9 , wherein the water gas shift catalyst comprises about 0.50 wt. % to about 6 wt. %, of Pt present in the water gas shift catalyst.

11. A method for producing a hydrogen-rich gas which comprises:

contacting a carbon monoxide containing gas with a water gas shift catalyst in the presence of water at a temperature of less than about 260° C.,

wherein the water gas shift catalyst consists essentially of:

a) Pt, its oxides or mixtures thereof;

b) Na, its oxides or mixtures thereof; and

c) Li, its oxides or mixtures thereof.

12. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is a syngas.

13. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the water gas shift catalyst is supported on a carrier comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, titania, ceria, magnesia, lanthania, niobia, yttria and iron oxide, and mixtures thereof.

14. A method according to claim 13 , wherein the alumina is doped with Zr.

15. A method according to claim 13 , wherein the carrier comprises zirconia.

16. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is contacted with the water gas shift catalyst at a pressure of no more than about 50 bar.

17. A method according to claim 16 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is contacted with the water gas shift catalyst at a pressure of no more than about 15 bar.

18. A method according to claim 16 , wherein the carbon monoxide containing gas is contacted with the water gas shift catalyst at a pressure of no more than about 1 bar.

19. A method according to claim 11 , wherein the water gas shift catalyst comprises about 0.05 wt. % to about 10 wt. %, with respect to the total weight of all catalyst components plus the support material, of Pt present in the water gas shift catalyst.

20. A method according to claim 19 , wherein the water gas shift catalyst comprises about 0.50 wt. % to about 6 wt. %, of Pt present in the water gas shift catalyst.
