Abstract

A photoactive moiety exhibiting an anisotropic transition dipole. The moiety exhibits emission of polarized light in response to energy absorption. In a preferred embodiment, the moiety comprises a particle from the group consisting of a crystalline arrangement of photoactive molecules and a photoactive nanocrystal. The moiety may include a matrix in which photoactive objects exhibiting an anisotropic emission dipole are embedded. The moiety may be photobleached to product the anisotropy and the photoactive objects may have a one dimensional transition dipole in their natural state.

Claims (22)

1. A method of determining the orientation of a photoactive moiety exhibiting an anisotropic transition dipole, comprising:

exposing the moiety to a light source to stimulate a spectral emission for the moiety; and

correlating the emission with the orientation of the moiety;

wherein the moiety exhibits spectral emission characterized by a bright axis and a dark axis, wherein the photoactive moiety has been photobleached to produce the anisotropy.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moiety exhibits emission polarized along two dimensions.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the moiety comprises a particle from the group consisting of a crystalline arrangement of photoactive molecules and a photoactive nanocrystal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moiety comprises a matrix in which photoactive objects exhibiting an anisotropic emission dipole are embedded.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the matrix comprises a polymer.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the photoactive objects comprise a member of the group consisting of a photoactive molecule, a single crystal of photoactive molecules, and a photoactive nanocrystal.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the photoactive moiety further comprises a magnetic or polar moiety.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the transition dipoles of the photoactive objects are aligned within the photoactive moiety.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moiety exhibits spectral emission polarized along one dimension.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the photoactive moiety is entrapped in a solid matrix.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the solid matrix comprises a polymer.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein a magnetic moiety is entrapped in the solid matrix.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising orienting the photoactive moiety with respect to a magnetic field before exposing the moiety, wherein the spectral emission is further characterized by its orientation with respect to the magnetic field.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating the photoactive moiety with an item of interest.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the item of interest is selected from an identification tag, a security tag, a consumer product, a fluid, a gas, a solid, a biomolecule, or a chemical compound.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising repeating exposing the moiety and correlating the emission.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spectral emission is further characterized by one or more of wavelength and intensity.

18. The method of claim 4 , wherein a magnetic moiety is disposed within the matrix.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising orienting the photoactive moiety with respect to a magnetic field before exposing the moiety, wherein the spectral emission is further characterized by its orientation with respect to the magnetic field.
