Abstract

A medical suction system comprising a medical suction canister used in draining bodily fluid from a patient, and a cleaning station for automatically draining and cleaning the suction canister and for automatically providing a visible indication that the canister has been cleaned.

Claims (22)

1. A medical apparatus for draining and cleaning the contents of a suction canister, said apparatus comprising:

a cabinet having a cradle adapted to removably support a suction canister having a suction port and a patient port and for containing fluid drained from a patient, said cradle including an interlocking member adapted to interengage with the suction canister;

a conduit for supplying a cleaning fluid to the interior of the suction canister; and

a drain line configured to remove the contents of the suction canister from said cabinet.

2. The medical apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the cradle is substantially the same size as a bottom most portion of the suction canister it removably supports.

3. The medical apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the interlocking member includes a stub having therein at least one notch.

4. The medical apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the cradle is adapted to support a bottom most portion of the suction canister.

5. The medical apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the cradle includes a recess.

6. An apparatus to drain and clean the contents of a suction canister having a suction port and a patient port, said apparatus comprising:

a cabinet;

a cradle adapted to engage a suction canister relative to said cabinet;

a conduit supplying a cleaning fluid to the interior of the suction canister;

a drain line adapted to collect and remove the contents of the suction canister from said cabinet;

a controller; and

a status indicator.

7. An apparatus for use with a medical suction canister having a suction port and a patient port, said apparatus comprising:

a cabinet;

a canister support adapted to a interengage with a suction canister relative to the cabinet;

a supply line in communication with a source of cleaning fluid and adapted to be in communication with the suction canister;

a drain line adapted to collect and remove the contents of the suction canister from the apparatus to a sewer system;

a controller; and

a status indicator.
