Abstract

Apparatus for endovascularly replacing a patient's heart valve, including: a delivery catheter having a diameter of 21 french or less; an expandable anchor disposed within the delivery catheter; and a replacement valve disposed within the delivery catheter. The invention also includes a method for endovascularly replacing a heart valve of a patient. In some embodiments the method includes the steps of: inserting a catheter having a diameter no more than 21 french into the patient; endovascularly delivering a replacement valve and an expandable anchor to a vicinity of the heart valve through the catheter; and deploying the anchor and the replacement valve.

Claims (16)

1. A method for endovascularly replacing a heart valve of a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a catheter having a diameter no more than 21 french into the patient;

endovascularly delivering a replacement valve and an expandable anchor to a vicinity of the heart valve through the catheter; and

deploying the anchor and the replacement valve by actuating the anchor with a deployment tool, wherein actuating comprises applying an axially directed force on the anchor with the deployment tool to radially expand the anchor after the anchor has been delivered completely outside of the catheter.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the heart valve is an aortic valve, the inserting step comprising inserting the catheter to the vicinity of the aortic valve along a retrograde approach.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the delivering step further comprises endovascularly delivering an anchor deployment tool through the catheter.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the deploying step comprises releasing the anchor from the deployment tool.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the replacement valve and the anchor are coupled, the delivering step comprising endovascularly delivering the coupled replacement valve and anchor to the vicinity of the heart valve.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein applying an axially directed force on the anchor to expand the anchor comprises applying a proximally directed force on the anchor to expand the anchor.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein applying an axially directed force on the anchor to expand the anchor comprises applying a distally directed force on the anchor to expand the anchor.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein applying an axially directed force on the anchor to expand the anchor comprises applying a proximally directed force and a distally directed force on the anchor to expand the anchor.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising endovascularly delivering an expandable balloon through the catheter to the vicinity of the heart valve.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the deploying step comprises using the balloon to expand the anchor.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of endovascularly delivering the expandable balloon comprises endovascularly delivering the expandable balloon apart from the anchor.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising coupling the replacement valve to the anchor.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising retrieving the anchor into the catheter after expanding the anchor.
