Abstract

A flat panel display having a black mask EMI layer isolated from Vcom and tied to zero potential. The flat panel display has an integral metal heater layer and thermal sensor that are in close proximity to the liquid crystals to provide efficient heating and temperature sensing.

Claims (23)

1. A flat panel display comprising:

a front glass plate;

a rear glass plate;

a layer of liquid crystals interposed between said front and rear glass plates;

a TFT array layer interposed between said front and rear glass plates; and

an optically hidden metal heater layer integral to said TFT array layer; and

an EMI layer interposed between said front and rear glass plates,

wherein said EMI layer is a low electrical resistance layer for absorbing and conducting interference signals from said display; and

said metal heater layer being optically hidden behind said EMI layer.

2. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer is patterned onto said TFT array layer.

3. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer is comprised of a grid of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines.

4. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer is interposed between said front and rear glass plates to allow faster heating of said layer of liquid crystals.

5. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said EMI layer is a black mask layer; and wherein said EMI layer is tied to zero potential and electrically isolated from Vcom.

6. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , further comprising:

pixel capacitors, wherein said metal heater layer is overcoated with a passivation layer to electrically isolate said metal heater layer from said pixel capacitors.

7. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer does not reduce light transmission through said display.

8. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer is applied in a grid pattern.

9. A flat panel display according to claim 8 , wherein said grid pattern is applied to minimize capacitive coupling in said display.

10. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer is overcoated with an insulating dielectric.

11. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , further comprising:

source and gate lines, wherein said metal heater layer is further comprised of conductor lines applied in a grid pattern;

and wherein said conductor lines lie under said source and gate lines.

12. A flat panel display according to claim 1 , wherein said metal heater layer is applied in a grid pattern; and wherein said grid pattern is applied to provide a greater heat output around a periphery of said display.
