Abstract

An orthopedic device set, including: a plurality of intervertebral spacer elements, each spacer element having a different axial thickness from each other element, the axial thicknesses being selected to increase by an increment from one element to another; and an instrument for holding ones of the intervertebral spacer elements, the instrument comprising a shaft having a distal end, a selectively grasping subassembly for alternatively rigidly holding each spacer element at the distal end so that the spacer element cannot move relative to the instrument, and releasing the spacer element.

Claims (21)

1. An orthopedic device set, comprising:

a plurality of intervertebral spacers, each spacer having a different axial thickness from each other spacer, each spacer including a groove that defines a central axial core of the spacer, wherein the grooves of each of the spacers have the same dimensions;

an instrument for holding ones of the intervertebral spacers by the axial core of the spacer, the instrument comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a circular hook greater than a half of a circumference of a circle formed at a distal end and a notch formed in the hook, the center of the hook being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis; and

a selectively grasping subassembly for alternatively capturing the spacer in the hook by pushing the axial core in the hook and releasing the spacer by forcing out the axial core from the hook, the subassembly having a second hook, the second hook having a diameter larger than a diameter of the circular hook.

2. The set of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the spacers comprises a porous material.

3. The set of claim 1 , wherein each spacer has parallel upper and lower surfaces.

4. The set of claim 3 , wherein the parallel upper and lower surfaces on each of the spacers are flat surfaces that extend continuously from a center to an outer periphery of each of the spacers.

5. The set of claim 1 , wherein each spacer has non-parallel upper and lower surfaces.

6. The set of claim 5 , wherein the non-parallel upper and lower surfaces define a taper angle that is selected to counter a misalignment of adjacent vertebral bones.

7. The set of claim 5 , wherein the non-parallel upper and lower surfaces are flat.

8. The set of claim 7 , wherein the flat, non-parallel upper and lower surfaces extend continuously from a center to an outer periphery of each of the spacers.

9. The set of claim 1 , wherein each intervertebral spacer is formed of a material that facilitates bone growth between adjacent vertebral bones after being placed therebetween.

10. The set of claim 1 , wherein the selectively grasping subassembly comprises:

a fixed element at the distal end of said instrument;

a selectively translateable element, which translates between open and closed positions;

the fixed and selectively translateable elements defining a spacer retaining space into which the axial core of each spacer can pass freely when the selectively translateable element is in the open position, and in which the spacer is held when the selectively translateable element is in the closed position; and further comprising

a remote actuation mechanism that is coupled to the selectively translateable element for translating it between the open and closed positions.

11. The set of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the spacers has a flat top surface and a flat bottom surface.

12. The set of claim 11 , wherein the flat top and bottom surfaces of the at least one of the spacers are angled relative to one another.

13. The set of claim 12 , wherein the flat top and bottom surfaces extend from a center to an outer periphery of the at least one of the spacers.

14. The set of claim 1 , wherein each of the spacers has a different flange thickness.
