Abstract

A synchronization process, and associated apparatus, for placing database copies in match with one another by way of communications effectuated upon an air interface of a radio communication system. Hash functions are performed at a mobile node and at a network part upon mobile and network copies of database information. Comparison of the hash information formed therefrom provides a preliminary indication of whether the databases are in match with one another. If a determination is made that the databases are out of match, the data is compared, and the data is placed in match with one another responsive to such additional comparisons.

Claims (18)

1. A method for synchronizing a plurality of extensible markup language (XML) databases on a network with a plurality of extensible markup language (XML) databases on a mobile node, the method comprising:

creating first hash information pursuant to a first technique, the first hash information being representative of values contained in the mobile node's plurality of databases;

communicating the first hash information to the network node;

receiving at a request detector coupled to receiver circuitry of the mobile node a request from the network for second hash information when the network determines, based at least on the first hash information, that the plurality of databases on the network and the plurality of databases on the mobile node are out-of-match;

creating the second hash information pursuant to a second technique;

wherein the first technique is less computationally-intensive than the second technique and the first hash information requires less communication channel capacity than the second hash information; and

receiving a fetch request, piggybacked with second data for the mobile node based upon a type of synchronization, when the second hash information is indicative of a change to data of which the second hash information is representative.

2. The method of claim 1 , where in first hash information is based upon first data contained in two or more databases maintained at the mobile node.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating a synchronization trigger at the mobile node.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising being delivered a synchronization trigger.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the communicating of the first hash information to the network node further comprises communicating the first hash information to the network node in a single transmission on an air interface.

6. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable storage medium, said computer program product for synchronizing a plurality of extensible markup language (XML) databases on a network with a plurality of extensible markup language (XML) databases on a mobile node, the computer program product comprising:

computer readable program code embodied at the non-transitory computer readable storage medium and configured to create first hash information pursuant to a first technique, the first hash information being representative of values contained in the mobile node's plurality of databases;

computer readable program code embodied at the non-transitory computer readable storage medium and configured to communicate the first hash information to the network node;

computer readable program code embodied at the non-transitory computer readable storage medium and configured to receive at a request detector coupled to receiver circuitry of the mobile node a request from the network for second hash information when the network determines, based at least on the first hash information, that the plurality of databases on the network and the plurality of databases on the mobile node are out-of-match;

computer readable program code embodied at the non-transitory computer readable storage medium and configured to create the second hash information pursuant to a second technique;

wherein the first technique is less computationally-intensive than the second technique and the first hash information requires less communication channel capacity than the second hash information; and

computer readable program code embodied at the non-transitory computer readable storage medium and configured to receive a fetch request, piggybacked with second data for the mobile node based upon a type of synchronization, when the second hash information is indicative of a change to data of which the second hash information is representative.
