Counter rotational layering of ePTFE to improve mechanical properties of a prosthesis
View Patent ↗A prosthesis, and method for forming same, are provided which includes expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) tubes having angularly offset node and fibril configurations. Also, the node and fibril configurations are angularly offset from the longitudinal axes of the respective tubes, providing resistance against failure in the longitudinal direction.
1. A method for forming a prosthesis comprising:
forming a first tube;
forming a second tube having first and second ends said second tube including ePTFE;
twisting said second tube by rotating said first end relative to said second end;
maintaining said second tube in said twisted configuration;
coaxially disposing said second tube relative to said first tube; and,
fixing said second tube to said first tube.
2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said first tube includes ePTEE.
3. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said fixing includes sintering.
4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said fixing includes bonding.
5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said first tube includes first and second ends, and wherein said method further comprising twisting said first tube by rotating said first end of said first tube relative to said second end of said first tube, said first end of said first tube being rotated in a rotational direction relative to said second end of said first tube different from the rotational direction of the rotating of said first end of said second tube relative to said second end of said second tube.
6. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising coaxially disposing a radially-expandable support member relative to said first tube or said second tube.
7. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising coaxially disposing a radially-expandable support member relative to said fixed first and second tubes.
