Inertia valve shock absorber
View Patent ↗A damper including a valve movable between an open position and a closed position to selectively alter the compression damping rate of the shock absorber. The valve may include a self-centering feature that operates to keep the valve body centered about the valve shaft. The damper may also include a timer feature, which retains the valve in an open position for a predetermined period of time after it is initially opened.
1. A damper, comprising:
a first fluid chamber;
a second fluid chamber;
a fluid circuit connecting said first fluid chamber and said second fluid chamber;
an acceleration sensor configured to produce a control signal in response to an acceleration force above a first predetermined threshold;
an inertia valve comprising an inertia mass, said inertia mass at least partially comprising a magnetic material and being movable between a first position and a second position, said inertia valve permitting a first rate of fluid flow through said fluid circuit in said first position of said inertia mass and said inertia valve permitting a second rate of fluid flow through said fluid circuit in said second position of said inertia mass, said second rate of fluid flow being non-equal to said first rate, wherein said inertia mass moves in a direction from said first position to said second position in response to an acceleration force above a second predetermined threshold;
an electromagnetic force generator capable of retaining said inertia mass in said second position; and
a control system configured to receive said control signal from said sensor and selectively activate said electromagnetic force generator in response to said control signal to retain said inertia mass in said second position for a predetermined period of time after said acceleration force diminishes below said first predetermined threshold.
2. The damper of claim 1 , wherein said first predetermined threshold is approximately equal to said second predetermined threshold.
3. The damper of claim 1 , wherein said electromagnetic element is capable of urging said inertia mass toward said second position when activated.
4. The damper of claim 1 , wherein said shock absorber comprises an adjustment mechanism to permit adjustment of said predetermined period of time.
5. The damper of claim 1 , wherein said shock absorber comprises an adjustment mechanism to permit adjustment of said first predetermined acceleration threshold.
