Cardiac reinforcement device
The present disclosure is directed to a cardiac reinforcement device (CRD) and method for the treatment of cardiomyopathy. The CRD provides for reinforcement of the walls of the heart by constraining cardiac expansion, beyond a predetermined limit, during diastolic expansion of the heart. A CRD of the invention can be applied to the epicardium of the heart to locally constrain expansion of the cardiac wall or to circumferentially constrain the cardiac wall during cardiac expansion.
1. A cardiac reinforcement device for constraining cardiac dilation of a heart during diastole, said device comprising: a biomedical material that is compliant and sufficiently flexible to conform to the heart and move with expansion and contraction of said heart without impairing systolic function, wherein said biomedical material is formed into a jacket having a base end and an apex end, wherein both said base end and said apex end are open, and wherein said jacket is sized to circumferentially surround said heart and circumferentially constrain cardiac expansion of said heart during diastole.
2. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said open apex end of said jacket is sized to allow at least a portion of the apex of said heart to protrude there through.
3. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said biomedical material is an open cell construction with a plurality of open cells defined by interconnected, elongated elements.
4. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said biomedical material is a polyester mesh.
5. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said biomedical material is a knit material.
6. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said biomedical material is elastic.
7. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said biomedical material is inelastic.
8. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said jacket is sized to be applied to the epicardium of the heart.
9. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said jacket is sized to be applied to the pericardium of the heart.
10. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 further comprising a shape memory material.
11. The cardiac reinforcement device of claim 1 , wherein said biomedical material has a compliance lower than a compliance of a wall of the heart.
