Abstract

A clip on welder includes two pairs of opposed grippers defined by pivotally attached upper and lower frames for latching the welder to heat weldable material, such as a length of tubing, upon actuation of a start button by an operator; thereafter, the welder operates unattended. At least a jaw of a pair of jaws disposed intermediate the two pairs of grippers heats the material compressed and lodged therebetween to form a weld in or across the material. A source of gas, such as air, under pressure selectively connected to a bellows provides the power to pivot the upper and lower frames into gripping engagement with the material. A source of electrical signals provides the power to heat the material intermediate the pair of jaws. One or more thermocouples senses the heat of the jaws and generates signals used to control the application of power and to control cooling. After completion of the weld, cooling air is directed to the jaws until the thermocouple(s) signal(s) indicates a sufficiently low temperature. Release of the welder from the material is in response to actuation of a stop button by the operator.

Claims (28)

1. A method for forming a weld across a length of tubing to be sealed with a welder temporarily clipped on the length of tubing, said method comprising the steps of:

a) inserting a length of tubing through the welder in engagement with two pairs of grippers at spaced apart locations and bracketing a pair of jaws;

b) urging the two pairs of grippers and the pair of jaws toward one another to compress the tubing therebetween;

c) energizing at least one jaw of the pair of jaws to heat the tubing therebetween and form a seal across the tubing; and

d) terminating said step of energizing on formation of a weld across the tubing.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the welder includes an upper and a lower frame pivotally interconnected with one another and wherein said step of inserting includes the step of inserting the tubing between the upper and lower frames.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of urging includes the step of urging pivotal movement of the upper and lower frames with an inflatable bellows.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1 including the step of providing a gas under pressure to the bellows from a source of gas under pressure.

5. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said steps of energizing comprises the step of energizing a heating element disposed in each jaw of the pair of jaws.

6. The method as set forth in claim 5 including the step of cooling each heating element with a flow of air.

7. The method as set forth in claim 6 including the step of providing a source of air under pressure and the step of conveying the air under pressure to each heating element.

8. The method as set forth in claim 1 including a programmable controller and including the step of controlling said urging step, said energizing step and said terminating step with the programmable controller.

9. The method as set forth in claim 8 including the step of cooling each heating element with a flow of air, said step of cooling being controlled by the programmable controller.

10. The method as set forth in claim 1 including the step of sensing the temperature of each heating element and providing a signal reflective of each sensed temperature.

11. The method as set forth in claim 8 including the step of sensing the temperature of each heating element and providing a signal to the programmable controller reflective of each sensed temperature.

12. A method for unattended welding of heat weldable material with a clip on welder, said method comprising the steps of:

a) clipping the welder at two spaced apart locations on the material to be welded;

b) energizing at least one jaw for heating and melting the material to form a weld intermediate the two locations;

c) providing a source of gas under pressure on command to practice said step of clipping;

d) further providing a source of electrical signals to effectuate said step of energizing; and

e) unclipping the welder from the material on completion of the seal.

13. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the at least one jaw includes a pair of opposed jaws and said step of clipping includes the step of moving the jaws toward one another to compress the material therebetween.

14. The method as set forth in claim 12 including the step of cooling the jaws on completion of the seal, said step of cooling including the step of forcing air through a passageway in at least one of the jaws and exhausting the air from the passageway to the atmosphere.

15. The method as set forth in claim 12 including the step of sensing the temperature of at least one jaw and the step of controlling the heating of the material as a function of the temperature sensed.

16. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the welder includes an upper and a lower frame pivotally interconnected and wherein said step of clipping and said step of unclipping includes the step of pivoting the upper and lower frames relative to one another.

17. The method as set forth in claim 12 including the step of inflating and deflating a bellows to exercise said steps of clipping and unclipping.

18. The method as set forth in claim 17 wherein said step of clipping includes the step of gripping the material at two spaced apart locations.

19. The method as set forth in claim 12 including a programmable controller for exercising each of the steps of clipping, energizing, providing, further providing and unclipping.
