Method for production of archidonic acid
View Patent ↗The present invention relates to a process for producing arachidonic acid. In one embodiment, Mortierella sect. schmuckeri microorganisms are cultured in fermentation medium, preferably containing a component of a complex nitrogen source. Further disclosed is a food product which includes Mortierella sect. schmuckeri microorganisms or lipid isolated from such microorganisms to enhance the arachidonic acid content of the food product.
1. A food product comprising:
(a) a microorganism of the genus Mortierella sect. schmuckeri , lipids recovered from said microorganism or mixtures thereof; and
(b) a food material,
wherein at least about 21.9% of the total fatty acid of a biomass of said Mortierella sect. Schmuckeri is arachidonic acid, and wherein said Mortierella sect. schmuckeri is capable of producing at least about 0.7 grams of arachidonic acid per liter per day.
2. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food material comprises animal food.
3. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food material comprises human food.
4. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said Mortierella sect. schmuckeri is of the species Mortierella schmuckeri.
5. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said Mortierella sect. schmuckeri is of the species Mortierella camargensis.
6. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food product has a total fatty acid content in which up to about 20% by weight of total fatty acids is arachidonic acid.
7. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food product has a total fatty acid content in which up to about 10% by weight of total fatty acids is arachidonic acid.
8. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food product has a total fatty acid content in which between about 0.1% and about 1.0% by weight of total fatty acids is arachidonic acid.
9. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food material comprises an infant food material.
10. The food product of claim 1 , wherein said food product is selected from the group consisting of infant formula and baby food.
