Abstract

The production of tetrabasic lead sulfate by means of solid state reactions at high temperatures allow the formation of powders having a particle size of less than 10 μm. In the methods the chemical reaction that takes place between lead oxide and different sulfated compounds occurs in a single high temperature treatment. The sulfated compounds used in the present invention to produce the tetrabasic lead sulfate are: PbSO 4 , 3PbO.PbSO 4 .H 2 O, H 2 SO 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . There are lead-acid battery pastes produced using the tetrabasic lead sulfate made, the lead-acid battery plates made with the pastes, and the lead-acid batteries subsequently made with the plates.

Claims (33)

1. A solid state reaction method for the production of tetrabasic lead sulfate by reacting 4PbO and PbSO 4, comprising the steps of:

mixing a stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4;

heating the stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 at a temperature between 500 and 700° C. for 3 to 8 hours; and

deagglomerating and sieving resulting tetrabasic lead sulfate.

2. The solid state reaction method of claim 1 wherein the step of heating the stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 is performed at a temperature of 600° C.

3. The solid state reaction method of claim 2 wherein the step of heating the stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 is performed for 4 hours.

4. The solid state reaction method of claim 1 wherein the tetrabasic lead sulfate has a particle size of less than 10 μm.

5. The solid state reaction method of claim 1 wherein the step of deagglomerating and sieving is a dispersion process.

6. The solid state reaction method of claim 5 wherein the dispersion process is carried out under dry conditions.

7. The solid state reaction method of claim 5 wherein the dispersion process is carried out in a liquid suspension.

8. A method of forming a battery plate comprising:

mixing a stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 ;

heating the stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 at a temperature between 500 and 700 ° C. for between 3 and 8 hours to form tetrabasic lead sulfate;

deagglomerating and sieving the tetrabasic lead sulfate;

forming a paste using the tetrabasic lead sulfate; and

providing the paste on a battery plate.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the step of heating the stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 is performed at a temperature of 600° C.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of heating the stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 is performed for 4 hours.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein the tetrabasic lead sulfate has a particle size of less than 10 μm.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein the step of deagglomerating and sieving is a dispersion process.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the dispersion process is carried out under dry conditions.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the dispersion process is carried out in a liquid suspension.

15. A method of produced lead-acid battery, said method comprising:

providing a battery comprising a plurality of battery plates, the battery plates prepared by a method comprising:

mixing a stoichiometric mixture of 4PbO and PbSO 4 ;

heating the stoichiometric mixture at a temperature between 500 and 700° C. for a period of between 3 and 8 hours to form tetrabasic lead sulfate;

deagglomerating and sieving the tetrabasic lead sulfate;

forming a paste using the deagglomerated and sieved tetrabasic lead sulfate; and

providing the paste on a battery plate.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the step of heating the stoichiometric mixture is performed at a temperature of 600° C.
