Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of making a golf ball by mixing a polyisocyanate copolymer and at least one other reactant, such as a polyol, to form a reaction product and reaction injection molding the reaction product to form at least one of a core and cover component. Preferably, the polyisocyanate copolymer includes an aromatic polyisocyanate and an aliphatic polyisocyanate. Most preferably, the polyisocyanate copolymer includes a copolymer of toluene diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate.

Claims (18)

1. A golf ball having a polyurethane or polyurea cover comprising:

a core; and

a cover disposed about said core, the cover having a thickness ranging from 0.01 inch to 0.20 inch;

wherein said cover comprises the reaction product of an isocyanate copolymer and at least one other reactant, wherein said isocyanate copolymer is a copolymer of toluene diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein said other reactant is selected from the group consisting of (i) an agent having one or more hydroxyl groups, (ii) an agent having one or more amine groups, and (iii) combinations of (i) and (ii).

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein said other reactant is selected from the group consisting of polyether polyols, polyester polyols, polyamines, and mixtures thereof.

4. A golf ball comprising:

a solid core comprising one or more layers; and

a cover comprising one or mare layers disposed about said, the cover having a thickness ranging from 0.01 inch to 0.20 inch;

wherein at least one layer of said core or said cover comprises the reaction product of a polyisocyanate copolymer, said polyisocyanate copolymer comprising a copolymer of an aromatic diisocyanate and an aliphatic diisocyanate, and at least one other reactant selected from the group consisting of polyamine, polyamide, alkyd and an epoxy resin.

5. The golf ball of claim 4 , wherein said polyisocyanate copolymer comprises toluene diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate.

6. A method for making a golf ball component comprising polyurethane or polyurea comprising the steps of:

mixing a polyisocyanate copolymer of an aromatic diisocyanate and an aliphatic diisocyanate and at least one reactant;

chemically reacting said polyisocyanate copolymer, a chain extender and at least one reactant to form a reaction mixture adapted for reaction injection molding, wherein said reactant is selected from the group consisting of polyether polyols, polyester polyols, polyamines, and mixtures thereof; and

molding said reaction mixture to form a golf ball component,

wherein said golf ball component is selected from the group consisting of a golf ball cover having a thickness ranging from 0.01 inch to 0.20 inch, a golf ball intermediate layer having a thickness ranging from 0.01 inch to 0.20 inch, and a golf ball core.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said reaction mixture is molded into a golf ball cover.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein said reaction mixture is molded into a golf ball intermediate layer.
