Abstract

A surgical tack is provided that can have a single shaft formed of a bio-compatible material and a tip adapted for entering and engaging bone or tissue; and a head mounted on said shaft.

Claims (19)

1. A sling system for treating incontinence, comprising:

an elongate mesh sling having a support portion adapted to support a bladder neck or urethra of a patient, the support portion having a support width;

at least one tack connected to the mesh sling, the tack having a shaft, and a tip, the shaft having a shaft width less than the support width of the mesh sling, and the shaft further having two or more spiral arms such that the tack is adapted to enter and engage soft tissue; and

an insertion device having a handle and an end portion, the end portion adapted for operable engagement with the shaft of the tack, and at least a portion of the handle facilitates operative selective disengagement of the tack from the insertion device; wherein a portion of the mesh sling is connected within an aperture of the shaft; and wherein the insertion device includes a curved body portion extending between the handle and the end portion.

2. The sling system of claim 1 , wherein the two or more spiral arms includes two flexible spiral arms extending from the tip of the tack.

3. The sling system of claim 1 , wherein the mesh sling includes at least one end portion having a width smaller than the support width of the support portion.

4. The sling system of claim 1 , wherein the mesh sling is constructed at least in part of a synthetic material.

5. The sling system of claim 1 , wherein the tack further includes a head portion.

6. The sling system of claim 1 , wherein the shaft of the tack includes an aperture therein.

7. The sling system of claim 1 , wherein the curved body portion is adapted to traverse through an incision in the vagina.

8. A sling system for treating incontinence, comprising:

an elongate mesh sling having a support portion adapted to support a bladder neck or urethra of a patient, the support portion having a support width;

at least one tack connected to the mesh sling, the tack having a shaft, and a tip, the shaft having a shaft width less than the support width of the mesh sling, and the shaft further having at least one extending spiral-shaped arm such that the tack is adapted to enter and engage soft tissue; and

an insertion device having a handle, a curved body portion and an end portion, wherein the tack is operably engageable with and disengageable from the end portion of the insertion device; wherein the shaft of the tack includes an aperture therein; and wherein a portion of the mesh sling is connected within the aperture of the shaft.

9. The sling system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one spiral-shaped arm includes two spiral-shaped arms extending from the tip of the tack.

10. The sling system of claim 8 , wherein the mesh sling includes at least one end portion having a width smaller than the support width of the support portion.

11. The sling system of claim 8 , wherein the mesh sling is constructed at least in part of a synthetic material.

12. The sling system of claim 8 , wherein the tack further includes a head portion.

13. The sling system of claim 8 , wherein the curved body portion is adapted to traverse through an incision in the vagina.
