Abstract

This invention provides novel nanofibers and nanofiber structures which posses adherent properties, as well as the use of such nanofibers and nanofiber comprising structures in the coupling and/or joining together of articles or materials.

Claims (34)

1. A method of adhering a surface of a medical device to a biological tissue surface, the method comprising:

i) providing a medical device having at least a first surface and a plurality of silicon nanofibers associated with the first surface; and

ii) contacting the medical device to a biological tissue surface whereby the nanofibers contact the biological tissue surface at a plurality of contact points, such that forces between the nanofibers and the biological tissue surface adhere the medical device to the biological tissue surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biological tissue comprises one or more of: a vessel, an organ, bone, flesh, or plant material.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biological tissue comprises an animal tissue, an amphibian tissue, a reptilian tissue, an avian tissue, a mammal tissue, a non-human primate tissue, or a human tissue.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device comprises a clamp, a stent, a shunt, a probe, a retractor, a patch, a bandage, or a medical mesh.

5. An adherent medical device, the device comprising:

at least a first surface comprising a plurality of silicon nanofibers, whereby the nanofibers are arranged on the first surface to contact a biological tissue surface at a plurality of contact points at least a portion of which are located on a side surface of the nanofibers, such that forces between the nanofibers and biological tissue surface adhere the medical device to the biological tissue surface substantially by van der Waals forces between the nanofibers and the biological tissue surface.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the van der Waals forces comprises from at least about 0.1 newton per centimeter 2 to at least about 100 newtons per centimeter 2 .

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein the van der Waals forces comprises from at least about 0.5 newton per centimeter 2 to at least about 50 newtons per centimeter 2 .

8. The device of claim 5 , wherein the van der Waals forces comprises from at least about 1 newton per centimeter 2 to at least about 25 newtons per centimeter 2 .

9. The device of claim 5 , wherein the van der Waals forces comprises from at least about 2 newtons per centimeter 2 to at least about 10 newtons per centimeter 2 .

10. The device of claim 5 , wherein the nanofibers comprise hollow nanotubular structures.

11. The device of claim 5 , wherein substantially all nanofibers comprise one or more associated moiety.

12. The device of claim 5 , wherein the one or more moiety comprises a functional moiety.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the functional moiety creates a van der Waals attraction between the nanofiber and the biological tissue surface, greater than a van der Waals attraction between the nanofiber and such surface in the absence of the moiety.

14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the functional moiety creates a friction force between the nanofiber and the biological tissue surface greater than a friction force between the nanofiber and such surface in the absence of the moiety.

15. The device of claim 5 , wherein the biological tissue comprises one or more of: plant tissue, animal tissue, or bone tissue.

16. The device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a device for grasping the biological tissue.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein grasping comprises controllably adhering such tissue to the medical device.

18. The device of claim 16 , wherein grasping comprises a controllable period of time.

19. The device of claim 5 , wherein the device comprises a device for controllably positioning two or more biological tissues.

20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the device positions the two or more tissues relative to one another.

21. The device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a screw.

22. The device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a nail.

23. The device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a staple.

24. The device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a probe.

25. The device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a laminar sheet.

26. The medical device of claim 5 , wherein the medical device comprises a clamp, a binding staple, a forceps, a vise grip, a circular clamp, a barrel clamp, or a clip.

27. The device of claim 5 , wherein the nanofibers are grown on the first surface of the medical device.

28. The device of claim 27 , wherein the nanofibers are grown by a VLS growth process.

29. The device of claim 5 , wherein the nanofibers have a length of at least about 50 microns.

30. The device of claim 5 , wherein the nanofibers are coated with one or more functional moiety.

31. The device of claim 30 , wherein the one or more functional moiety is adapted to enhance the mechanical strength of the nanofibers.
