Abstract

A projection display includes a light source, a spatial light modulator that receives a light from the light source, and an angle-selective coating disposed to receive the light beam from the spatial light modulator. The angle-selective coating is oriented at a non-zero inclination angle to the light beam. The angle-selective coating has a higher transmission for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle within an acceptance-angle deviation from a design incidence angle, than for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle greater than the acceptance-angle deviation from the design incidence angle. The projection display preferably includes a TIR (total internal reflection) prism disposed to reflect a light beam from the light source to the spatial light modulator, and to receive the light beam from the spatial light modulator. The angle-selective coating is preferably buried within the TIR prism.

Claims (44)

1. A projection display comprising:

a light source;

a spatial light modulator that receives a light beam from the light source; and

an angle-selective coating disposed to receive the light beam from the spatial light modulator, wherein the angle-selective coating has a higher transmission for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle within an acceptance-angle deviation from a design incidence angle than for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle greater than the acceptance-angle deviation from the design incidence angle.

2. The projection display of claim 1 , further including

a TIR prism disposed to reflect a light beam from the light source to the spatial light modulator, and to receive the light beam from the spatial light modulator, and wherein the angle-selective coating is buried within the TIR prism.

3. The projection display of claim 1 , wherein the design incidence angle is from about 10 to about 25 degrees of perpendicular to the angle-selective coating.

4. The projection display of claim 1 , wherein the acceptance-angle deviation is less than about 12 degrees.

5. The projection display of claim 1 , wherein the light source is a polychromatic visible light source.

6. The projection display of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is a digital micromirror device.

7. The projection display of claim 1 , wherein the angle-selective coating comprises a multilayer stack.

8. A projection display comprising:

a light source;

a spatial light modulator; and

a TIR prism that reflects a light beam from the light source to the spatial light modulator, and then allows light reflected from the spatial light modulator to pass therethrough; and

an angle-selective coating through which the light beam passes after it leaves the TIR prism, wherein the angle-selective coating has a higher transmission for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle within an acceptance-angle deviation from a design incidence angle than for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle greater than the acceptance-angle deviation from the design incidence angle.

9. The projection display of claim 8 , wherein the design incidence angle is from about 10 to about 25 degrees of perpendicular to the angle-selective coating.

10. The projection display of claim 8 , wherein the acceptance-angle deviation is less than about 12 degrees.

11. The projection display of claim 8 , wherein the light source is a polychromatic visible light source.

12. The projection display of claim 8 , wherein the spatial light modulator is a digital micromirror device.

13. The projection display of claim 8 , wherein the angle-selective coating comprises a multilayer stack.

14. A projection display comprising:

a light source;

a spatial light modulator; and

a TIR prism that reflects a source light beam from the light source to the spatial light modulator, and then allows light reflected from the spatial light modulator to pass therethrough, wherein the TIR prism comprises:

a first light-transparent body having

a first-body entry face through which the source light beam enters the TIR prism,

a first-body TIR face from which the source light beam reflects, and

a first-body modulator face through which the source light beam reflected from the first-body TIR face passes to be incident upon the spatial light modulator, wherein the light beam reflected from the spatial light modulator passes through the first-body modulator face and the first-body TIR face,

a second light-transparent body having

a second-body face facing the first-body TIR face but separated from the fist-body TIR face by an air gap, and

a second-body inclined face that is inclined by an inclination angle to the light beam that passes through the second-body face and is incident upon the second-body inclined face,

an angle-selective coating at the second-body inclined face, wherein the angle-selective coating has a higher transmission for light that is incident upon the second-body inclined face at an incidence angle within a acceptance-angle deviation from a design incidence angle than for light that is incident upon the angle-selective coating at an incidence angle greater than the acceptance-angle deviation from the design incidence angle, and

a third light-transparent body having a third-body inclined face joined to the second-body inclined face with the angle-selective coating therebetween.

15. The projection display of claim 14 , wherein the inclination angle is a non-zero inclination angle.

16. The projection display of claim 14 , wherein the design incidence angle is from about 10 to about 25 degrees of perpendicular to the angle-selective coating.
