Abstract

An apparatus which inhibits the theft of equipment such as personal computers is disclosed. The equipment must have an external wall provided with a specially designed, approximately rectangular slot having preselected dimensions. An attachment mechanism includes a housing for a spindle having a first portion rotatable within the housing, a shaft extending outwardly from the housing, and a crossmember at the end of the shaft having peripheral dimensions closely conforming to the internal dimensions of the slot. An abutment mechanism also emanates from the housing, and is located on opposite sides of the shaft intermediate the housing and the crossmember. The peripheral cross-sectional dimensions of the abutment mechanism and the shaft in combination closely conform to the dimensions of the slot. The length of the shaft from the housing to the crossmember is approximately equal to the thickness of the external wall of equipment. The crossmember is aligned with the abutment mechanism so that the crossmember can be inserted through the slot with the shaft and the abutment mechanism occupying the slot. The spindle is then rotated 90° to misalign the crossmember with the slot, thereby attaching the attachment mechanism rigidly to the external wall. A cable is secured to the housing and to an immovable object so that the equipment cannot be stolen.

Claims (23)

1. A locking method for a portable electronic device, comprising:

inserting a locking member that is part of an attachment mechanism into a generally rectangular security slot, having dimensions of about 3 mm×7 mm, defined in a wall of the portable electronic device;

securing said attachment mechanism to the portable electronic device via the rectangular security slot, having dimensions of about 3 mm×7 mm; and

maintaining a locked configuration using the attachment mechanism, wherein the portable electronic device is secured to an object other than the portable electronic device.

2. The locking method of claim 1 wherein said locking member rotates to a locked position.

3. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the locked configuration is maintained by use of a pin proximate said locking member, and wherein said pin extends into said security slot after said locking member has moved to a locked position.

4. The locking method of claim 1 further comprising associating a cable, coupled to said locking member, to said object.

5. The locking method of claim 1 further comprising inserting a pin into said security slot before said locking member moves to a locked position.

6. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism includes a cylindrical housing around at least part of the locking member.

7. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the portable electronic device is a computer.

8. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the locking member is part of a security device, and wherein the security device includes a cable.

9. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism part of a security device, and wherein the security device includes a cable, and wherein the method further includes:

wrapping the cable around the object so that the portable electronic device is localized with respect to the object.

10. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the locking member includes a T-bar.

11. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism includes a pin.

12. The locking method of claim 11 wherein the locking member is part of a security device, and wherein the security device includes a cable.

13. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a housing.

14. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism is part of a security device, and wherein the security device includes a padlock.

15. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the locking member is part of a spindle.

16. The locking method of claim 1 wherein at least part of the locking member is disposed between a pair of pins in the attachment mechanism.

17. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the locking member is configured to be actuated using a key.

18. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the security slot has rounded corners.

19. The locking method of claim 1 wherein the locking member is part of a lock.
