Abstract

Claims (20)

1. A restraining gasket for use in a pipe joint when connecting a male pipe end to a female pipe end having a compression gland tightenably attached to the female pipe end, said restraining gasket comprising:

a) a resilient body; and

b) a locking segment, which comprises

(i) a radially inward tooth

(ii) a radially outward upper protrusion, and

(iii) an elbow positioned in the radially outer half of the gasket and axially between the gland and the upper protrusion,

wherein upon rotation of the locking segment, the tooth bites into the male pipe end, and the upper protrusion bites into the female pipe end;

and wherein rotation of the locking segment in response to a force tending to separate the first pipe end from the second pipe end is maintained below a desired maximum rotation by contact between the elbow and the compression gland.

2. A restraining gasket as in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of density regions, wherein said regions are adapted to influence the movement of said locking segment.

3. A method for preventing the disengagement of pipe lengths comprising:

a) inserting a spigot end of a first pipe length into a bell end of a second pipe length;

b) placing a gasket within the bell end and around the spigot end, said gasket comprising a compressible body and a locking member;

c) affixing a compression gland to the bell end in a manner that compresses the gasket to form a fluid seal;

d) further compressing the gasket and thereby rotating said locking member into a position of direct engagement with the spigot end and an interior surface of the bell end that is substantially parallel to an axis of the bell end;

e) preventing a full magnitude of an extractive force exerted upon the spigot end from being borne by the gland, by

(i) transferring a first portion of the force through said locking segment and directly into the interior surface of the bell end, and

(ii) transferring a second portion of the force through said locking segment to the gland.

A pipe joint comprising a spigot inserted partially within a bell, a compression gland annularly disposed about the spigot and connected to the bell by bolts, and a gasket disposed annularly about the spigot and between the bell, the spigot, and the gland; wherein said gasket comprises a locking segment therein that is in direct biting contact with the spigot and in direct biting contact with an interior surface of the bell that is substantially parallel to a central axis of the bell.

5. A pipe joint as in claim 4 , wherein an application of an extractive force to the spigot results in an increase of force resisted by the bolts, which increase is of a magnitude less than the extractive force.

6. A pipe joint as in claim 4 , wherein the locking segment is in direct contact with the gland.
