Abstract

Electrical cardiac therapy devices including electrode lead assemblies having first and second insertion tool receivers. The insertion tool receivers may be attached to an electrode and/or an electrode cover assembly. A lead assembly having first and second insertion tool receivers may be used in conjunction with an insertion tool having means, such as tines, for coupling with the insertion tool receivers. A lead assembly system may include both an insertion tool and a lead assembly. A treatment system further includes an implantable housing along with the lead assembly and insertion tool.

Claims (41)

1. An implantable lead electrode assembly for implantation in the torso of a patient, the assembly comprising:

an electrode having a proximal end, a distal end, first and second lateral portions, and front and back sides, the front side adapted for sliding insertion over the patient's ribcage;

a first insertion tool receiver secured relative the first lateral portion of the electrode;

a second insertion tool receiver secured relative the second lateral portion of the electrode; and

a cover assembly, the cover assembly defining the first insertion tool receiver;

wherein the cover assembly includes a front portion and a back portion, the front portion defining a skirt covering a portion of the front side of the electrode, the back portion disposed adjacent a portion of the back side of the electrode, the assembly further including securing means for securing the front portion and the back portion together on opposing sides of the electrode.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a cover piece secured to the electrode and including a skirt portion covering a portion of the front side of the electrode.

3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first insertion tool receiver and the second insertion tool receiver are disposed behind the back side of the electrode.

4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first insertion tool receiver and the second insertion tool receiver are disposed laterally outside of the electrode.

5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the securing means includes stitching.

6. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cover assembly further includes a curved portion defining a lumen, the lumen serving as one of the first or second insertion tool receivers, the curved portion connecting the back portion of the cover assembly to the front portion of the cover assembly.

7. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a lead electrically coupled to the electrode.

8. An implantable device system comprising:

an electrode lead assembly; and

an insertion tool for use in inserting the electrode lead assembly into a patient;

wherein the electrode lead assembly includes:

an electrode having a proximal end, a distal end, first and second lateral portions, and front and back sides;

a first insertion tool receiver secured relative the first lateral portion of the electrode; and

a second insertion tool receiver secured relative the second lateral portion of the electrode; and

wherein the insertion tool includes means for coupling with the first and second insertion tool receivers during insertion of the electrode lead assembly.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the electrode lead assembly further includes a cover piece secured to the electrode and including a skirt portion covering a portion of the front side of the electrode.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first insertion tool receiver and the second insertion tool receiver are disposed behind the back side of the electrode.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first insertion tool receiver and the second insertion tool receiver are disposed laterally outside of the electrode.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the electrode lead assembly further includes a cover assembly, the cover assembly defining the first insertion tool receiver.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the cover assembly includes a front portion and a back portion, the front portion defining a skirt covering a portion of the front side of the electrode, the back portion disposed adjacent a portion of the back side of the electrode, the assembly further including securing means for securing the front portion and the back portion together on opposing sides of the electrode.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the securing means includes stitching.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the cover assembly further includes a curved portion defining a lumen, the lumen serving as one of the first or second insertion tool receivers, the curved portion connecting the back portion of the cover assembly to the front portion of the cover assembly.

16. An implantable device system comprising:

an implantable housing containing circuitry adapted to provide electrical stimulus to alleviate cardiac disorders;

an electrode lead assembly including:

an electrode having a proximal end, a distal end, first and second lateral portions, and front and back sides;

a lead for electrically coupling the electrode to the housing;

a first insertion tool receiver secured relative the first lateral portion of the electrode; and

a second insertion tool receiver secured relative the second lateral portion of the electrode; and

an insertion tool including tines having fixed spacing to be receieved in the insertion tool receivers.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the electrode lead assembly further includes a cover assembly, the cover assembly defining the first insertion tool receiver.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the cover assembly includes a front portion and a back portion, the front portion defining a skirt covering a portion of the front side of the electrode, the back portion disposed adjacent a portion of the back side of the electrode, the assembly further including securing means for securing the front portion and the back portion together on opposing sides of the electrode.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the securing means includes stitching.

20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the cover assembly further includes a curved portion defining a lumen, the lumen serving as one of the first or second insertion tool receivers, the curved portion connecting the back portion of the cover assembly to the front portion of the cover assembly.

21. The system of claim 16 wherein the insertion tool defines a longitudinal direction in line with the first and second insertion tool receivers such that, when the tines are received in the insertion tool receivers, a least profile for the combination of the insertion tool and the electrode lead assembly is generally in alignment with the front side of the electrode.

22. The system of claim 16 wherein the insertion tool includes a handle portion coupled to the tines, wherein the handle portion is in axial alignment with the tines.
