Abstract

This invention relates to foam insulating products, particularly extruded polystyrene foam, containing asphalt as an infrared attuation and process additives for improving the insulating properties and for reducing the manufacturing cost of the foam products.

Claims (19)

1. A thermally insulating polymeric foam material comprising:

a) polystyrene;

b) from about 0.1% to about 15% asphalt by weight based on the polystyrene; and

c) a blowing agent.

2. The polymeric foam material of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric foam material contains from about 1% to about 4% asphalt by weight based on the polystyrene.

3. The polymeric foam material of claim 1 , wherein the asphalt has a softening point of from about 105° C. to about 155° C.

4. The polymeric foam material of claim 1 , further comprising one or more additives selected from the group consisting of infrared attenuating agents, plasticizers, flame retardant chemicals, pigments, elastoiners, extrusion aids, antioxidant; fillers, antistatic agents and UV absorbers.

5. The polymeric foam material of claim 1 , further comprising an infrared attenuating agent selected from the group consisting of silicates, oxides, and group IB, IIB, IIIA, IVA chemical elements.

6. A thermally insulating polymeric foam material comprising:

a) polystyrene;

b) from about 0.1% to about 15% asphalt by weight based on the polystyrene;

c) a blowing agent; and

d) an infrared attenuating agent.

7. The polymeric foam material of claim 6 , wherein the polymeric foam material contains from about 1% to about 4% asphalt by weight based on the polystyrene.

8. The polymeric foam material of claim 6 , wherein the asphalt has a softening point of from about 105° C. to about 155° C.

9. The polymeric foam material of claim 6 , wherein the infrared attenuating agent is selected from the group consisting of silicates, oxides, and group IB, IIB, IIIA, IVA chemical elements.

10. The polymeric foam material of claim 6 , further comprising one or more additives is selected from the group consisting of plasticizers, flame retardant chemicals, pigments, elastomers, extrusion aids, antioxidants, fillers, antistatic agents and UV absorbers.

11. The polymeric foam material of claim 6 , wherein said foam material has an R-value of at least 1.2 K.m 2 /W.

12. The polymeric foam material of claim 6 , wherein said polymeric foam material contains greater than 95% by weight polystyrene.
