Abstract

A method for automatically determining whether a reagent container is new and unused or whether the reagent container has been previously used whenever reagent containers are initially placed onto an analyzer. Unused containers have a flag or lock-out member that can be dislodged or relocated by a moveable sensor probe when containers are placed onto the analyzer.

Claims (33)

1. A multi-compartment reagent container in the form of a container strip generally tapered in a substantially elongated wedge-like manner from a first edgewall to a second edgewall between first and second sidewalls, the container having a flag member comprising a weakened bridge that is displaceable from a first position to a second position and is attached to an edgewall wherein the weakened bridge is mounted between first and second pylons attached to an edgewall, the first pylon attached to the edgewall proximate the intersection of the edgewall and the first sidewall and the second pylon attached to the edgewall proximate the intersection of the edgewall and the second sidewall.

2. The container of claim 1 wherein the bridge and the pylons define an open region proximate said at least one edgewall.

3. The container of claim 2 wherein the weakened bridge comprises a notch formed near the middle of the bridge contiguous with the open region.

4. The container of claim 3 wherein the weakened bridge further comprises a pair of cusps formed at the ends of the bridge enjoining the pylons.

5. The container of claim 4 wherein the cusps are formed on the opposite side of the bridge from said notch.

6. A reagent container comprising:

a plurality of wells linearly arrayed, each well adapted to hold clinical reagent;

first and second opposed sidewalls enclosing said array of wells;

first and second edgewalls extending between and joining the first and second opposed sidewalls at first and second pairs of intersecting edgewalls and sidewalls, the edgewalls and sidewalls forming a generally tapered, wedge-like shaped container;

a first pylon attached directly to the first edgewall and extending outwardly therefrom;

a second pylon spaced apart from the first pylon and attached directly to the first edgewall and extending outwardly therefrom; and,

a bridge mounted between said first and second pylons said bridge being displaceable from a first position to a second position whenever the container is initially placed onto an analyzer.

7. The reagent container of claim 6 wherein the first pylon is attached proximate the first pair of intersecting edgewalls and sidewalls and wherein the second pylon is attached proximate the second pair of intersecting edgewalls and sidewalls.

8. The reagent container of claim 6 wherein said wells are closed and sealable on a top surface.

9. The reagent container of claim 6 wherein said first edgewall is wider than the second edgewall.

10. The reagent container of claim 6 wherein said wells contain clinical reagents.

11. The reagent container of claim 6 wherein the bridge has a notch formed near the middle thereof.

12. The reagent container of claim 11 wherein the bridge further comprises a pair of cusps formed at the ends of the bridge enjoining the pylons.

13. The reagent container of claim 12 wherein the cusps are formed on the opposite side of the bridge from said notch.

14. The reagent container of claim 13 wherein the bridge and the pylons define an open region proximate said first edgewall.

15. A reagent container comprising:

a linear array of wells adapted to hold clinical reagents;

first and second opposed sidewalls enclosing said array of wells;

first and second edgewalls extending between and joining the first and second opposed sidewalls, the edgewalls and sidewalls forming a generally tapered, wedge-like shaped container;

a pair of pylons attached directly to the first edgewall and extending outwardly therefrom;

a bridge that is displaceable from a first position to a second position mounted between said pair of pylons.

16. The reagent container of claim 15 wherein said wells are closed and sealable on a top surface.

17. The reagent container of claim 15 wherein said first edgewall is wider than the second edgewall.

18. The reagent container of claim 15 wherein said wells contain clinical reagents.

19. The reagent container of claim 15 wherein the bridge has a notch formed near the middle thereof

20. The reagent container of claim 19 wherein the bridge further comprises a pair of cusps formed at the ends of the bridge enjoining the pylons.

21. The reagent container of claim 20 wherein the cusps are formed on the opposite side of the bridge from said notch.

22. The container of claim 18 wherein the bridge and the pylons define an open region proximate said first edgewall.
