Abstract

As part of a wireless access point configuration process, a computer network is probed and each previously unprogrammed wireless access point on the network is programmed by transmitting wireless network configuration parameters thereto using a software agent residing on a node of the computer network.

Claims (28)

1. A method, comprising:

probing a computer network for one or more wireless access points for the computer network, and, for each unprogrammed wireless access point discovered, programming such unprogrammed wireless access point by transmitting wireless network configuration parameters to the unprogrammed wireless access point using a software agent residing on a node of the computer network;

wherein the probing comprises sending messages to known communication ports of the wireless access points and wherein the probing includes periodically testing the computer network by the software agent to determine if the one or more wireless access points are present;

wherein the known communication ports include one or more of HTTP, SNMP and TelNet ports;

wherein, in response to the messages and from the wireless access points, receiving access to configuration interfaces through which the wireless access points can be programmed;

wherein the configuration interfaces include at least one HTML page with an associated IP address.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probing comprises transmitting additional messages to all local network IP addresses.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless network configuration parameters include one or more of static WEP keys, SSIDs, fallback keys, and MAC address filter lists.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the software agent automatically configures each unprogrammed wireless access point with the wireless network configuration parameters upon detection of the unprogrammed wireless access point on the computer network.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the node comprises a network server.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration interfaces are accessed through the at least one HTML page at the associated IP address.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the associated IP address is tested by the software agent to determine whether the configuration interfaces are returned.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of local IP addresses are tested, and a returned response is used to identify a kind of each wireless access point involved within the computer network.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the software agent configures each unprogrammed wireless access point with the wireless network configuration parameters in response to a user authorization.

10. A method, comprising:

probing a computer network for one or more wireless access points for the computer network, and, for each unprogrammed wireless access point discovered, programming such unprogrammed wireless access point by transmitting wireless network configuration parameters to the unprogrammed wireless access point using a software agent residing on a node of the computer network;

wherein the probing comprises sending messages to known communication ports of the wireless access points;

wherein the known communication ports include one or more of HTTP, SNMP and TelNet ports;

wherein, in response to the messages and from the wireless access points, receiving access to configuration interfaces through which the wireless access points can be programmed;

wherein the configuration interfaces include at least one HTML page with an associated IP address; and

wherein the software agent configures each unprogrammed wireless access point with the wireless network configuration parameters in response to a user authorization.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the probing comprises transmitting additional messages to all local network IP addresses.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the wireless network configuration parameters include one or more of static WEP keys, SSIDs, fallback keys, and MAC address filter lists.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the software agent automatically configures each unprogrammed wireless access point with the wireless network configuration parameters upon detection of the unprogrammed wireless access point on the computer network.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the node comprises a network server.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the configuration interfaces are accessed through the at least one HTML page at the associated IP address.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the associated IP address is tested by the software agent to determine whether the configuration interfaces are returned.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein a plurality of local IP addresses are tested, and a returned response is used to identify a kind of each wireless access point involved within the computer network.
