Abstract

A system automatically monitors playing and wagering of a game, including the gaming habits of players and the performance of employees. A card deck reader automatically reads a symbol from each card in a deck of cards before a first one of the cards is removed. The symbol identifies a respective rank and suit of the card.

positioning a plurality of playing cards in a housing to expose a symbol carrying portion of each of the cards;

automatically reading a respective symbol from the symbol carrying portion of each of the playing cards in the plurality of playing cards before a first one of the playing cards is removed from the housing to establish a playing card order; and

removing the plurality of playing cards from the housing such that each of the playing cards retains an order with respect to the other playing cards in the plurality of playing cards corresponding to an order in which the symbols were read; and

for each of the playing cards, decoding a respective one of the read symbols only if the playing card is dealt.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein automatically reading a respective symbol from each of the playing cards includes reading a bar code symbol carried by the playing card.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein automatically reading a respective symbol from each of the playing cards includes reading at least one of a respective unique serial number carried by each of the playing cards.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein automatically reading a respective symbol from each of the playing cards includes reading a card rank and a suit from a face of the playing card.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein automatically reading a respective symbol from each of the playing cards includes scanning the respective symbol from each of the playing cards.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein automatically reading a respective symbol from each of the playing cards includes imaging the respective symbol from each of the playing cards.

7. A method of automatically reading playing cards, comprising:

positioning a plurality of playing cards in a housing to expose a symbol charming portion of each of the cards;

automatically reading a respective symbol from the symbol carrying portion of each of the playing cards in the plurality of playing cards before a first one of the playing cards is removed from the housing to establish a playing card order; and

removing the plurality of playing cards from the housing such that each of the playing cards retains an order with respect to the other playing cards in the plurality of playing cards corresponding to an order in which the symbols were read; and

wherein removing the plurality of playing cards from the housing includes manually removing all of the playing cards in the plurality of playing cards as a single stack.

8. A method of automatically reading a plurality of playing cards, comprising:

orienting a stack of at least two playing cards such that at least an information carrying portion of each of the playing cards is exposed;

moving a reading head with respect to the plurality of cards; and

reading the information carrying portion on each of the cards in the stack before a first card is removed from the stack; and

dealing the playing cards in the same order that the playing cards occur in the stack.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein reading the information carrying portion on each of the cards in the stack includes scanning a machine-readable symbol encoding a unique serial number on each of the playing cards in the stack.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein reading the information carrying portion on each of the cards in the stack includes imaging a machine-readable symbol encoding a unique serial number on each of the playing cards in the stack.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

decoding each of the read information carrying portions.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

for each of the playing cards, decoding the read information carrying portion after the playing card has been dealt.
