Abstract

In some embodiments, among others, a searchable segment of a document is identified in accordance with an identification criterion. Thereafter, an image is generated from the searchable segment. The image is a substantially unsearchable representation of the searchable segment. A reference to the generated image is substituted for the searchable segment.

Claims (46)

1. A system comprising:

identification logic adapted to identify a searchable segment of a document, the searchable segment being identified in accordance with an identification criterion;

image-generation logic adapted to generate a first image from the searchable segment, the first image being a substantially unsearchable representation of the searchable segment; and

substitution logic adapted to substitute the searchable segment with a reference to the generated first image, such that the reference facilitates display of the generated first image to a user in substitution for the identified searchable segment in the document,

wherein upon a user selection of the displayed generated first image, the substitution logic is configured to provide the searchable segment for editing, wherein, upon providing the searchable segment, the user may edit the searchable segment and upon completion of editing of the searchable segment, the image-generation logic generates a second image that is a substantially unsearchable representation of the edited searchable segment.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification criterion is provided by a user.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification criterion is included in a predefined set of rules.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification logic comprises means for identifying a text string.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification logic comprises text-string identification logic adapted to identify a text string.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the text string is selected from the group consisting of:

a name;

an email address;

a social security number; and

a telephone number.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identification logic comprises personal-information identification logic adapted to identify personal information related to an individual.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the document is a web-publishable document selected from the group consisting of:

a hypertext markup language (HTML) file;

a text file;

a searchable portable document format (PDF) file; and

a file generated by a word processor.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the image-generation logic comprises conversion logic adapted to convert the searchable segment into an image.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the image is in a format selected from the group consisting of:

tagged image file format (TIFF);

bitmapped (BMP) format;

joint photographic experts group (JPEG) format; and

graphics interchange format (GIF).

11. A computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to:

identify a searchable segment of a document, the searchable segment being identified in accordance with an identification criterion;

generate a first image from the searchable segment, the first image being a substantially unsearchable representation of the searchable segment; and

substitute the searchable segment with a reference to the generated first image, such that the reference facilitates display of the generated first image to a user in substitution for the identified searchable segment in the document,

wherein upon a user selection of the displayed generated first image, the substitution logic is configured to provide the searchable segment for editing, wherein, upon providing the searchable segment, the user may edit the searchable segment and upon completion of editing of the searchable segment, a second image is generated that is a substantially unsearchable representation of the edited searchable segment.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , further comprising instructions that, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to perform at least one of the following:

instruct a programmable device to identify a text string; and

identify personal information related to an individual.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , further comprising instructions that, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to instruct a programmable device to identify a searchable segment within a web-publishable document.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , further comprising instructions that, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to instruct a programmable device to generate a database, the database correlating the searchable segment to its corresponding generated image.

15. A method comprising:

identifying a searchable segment of a document, the searchable segment being identified in accordance with an identification criterion;

generating a first image from the searchable segment, the first image being a substantially unsearchable representation of the searchable segment; and

substituting the searchable segment with a reference to the generated first image, such that the reference facilitates display of the generated first image to a user in substitution for the identified searchable segment in the document,

wherein upon a user selection of the displayed generated first image, the substitution logic is configured to provide the searchable segment for editing, wherein, upon providing the searchable segment, the user may edit the searchable segment and upon completion of editing of the searchable segment, a second image is generated that is a substantially unsearchable representation of the edited searchable segment.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein identifying the searchable segment comprises identifying a text string.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein identifying the searchable segment comprises identifying personal information related to an individual.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein identifying the searchable segment comprises identifying a searchable segment within a web-publishable document.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising generating a database, the database correlating the searchable segment to its corresponding generated image.

20. The method of claim 15 , in response to receiving edits from the user, generating a new image that is a substantially unsearchable representation of the edited searchable segment.
