Abstract

The present invention provides for methods of treating cardiovascular diseases in a mammal. The methods include a step of administering an effective amount of a botulinum toxin directly to a blood vessel of a mammal thereby treating a cardiovascular disease.

Claims (10)

1. A method for treating coronary arterial blockage in a mammal the method comprising the steps of (a) administering an effective amount of a botulinum toxin directly to a wall of a blood vessel of a mammal in an area of the coronary arterial blockage (b) allowing the blood vessel to dilate (c) inserting a balloon catheter and a stent coated or impregnated with a botulinum toxin into a femoral artery, (d) passing the balloon catheter and stent to the area of the coronary arterial blockage, (e) inflating the balloon catheter, and (f) expanding the stent to brace open the blood vessel, thereby treating the coronary arterial blockage.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein treating the coronary arterial blockage prevents restenosis.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin type A, botulinum toxin type B, botulinum toxin type C, botulinum toxin type D, botulinum toxin type E, botulinum toxin type F and botulinum toxin type G, mixtures thereof and combinations thereof.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type A.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type B.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type C.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type D.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type E.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type F.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin comprises botulinum toxin type G.
