Abstract

A box car includes end walls joined to opposing side walls that define the interior cargo area. Each end wall includes a corrugated side that faces the cargo area. The adjustable spacer is arranged within a cavity in the corrugated side in a stowed position so that it does not protrude into the cargo area. The side walls include tracks in which opposing guides that support the lateral beam are slideably received. The tracks do not protrude into the cargo area. The guides include multiple holes providing keyways that receive removable locks. Vertical side posts are arranged along the exterior of the side walls. Holes are arranged in the side walls in the area of the side posts. The locks are received in one of the holes in the guides and a hole in the side wall to lock the adjustable spacer in the desired position relative to the box car.

Claims (21)

1. A rail car for carrying lading comprising:

an end wall and side wall providing an interior cargo area, the end wall having a corrugated side facing the cargo area and including spaced apart stiffening members forming spaced apart cavities, the cavities exposed to the interior cargo area and providing storage space; and and

an adjustable spacer for securing the lading and movable between multiple positions, one of the multiple positions including a stowed position in which a portion of the spacer is arranged within one of the cavities.

2. A rail car for carrying lading comprising:

an end wall and side wall providing an interior cargo area, the end wall having a corrugated side facing the cargo area and including spaced apart stiffening members forming spaced apart cavities, the cavities providing storage space; and

an adjustable spacer for securing the lading and movable between multiple positions, one of the multiple positions including a stowed position in which a portion of the spacer is arranged within one of the cavities; wherein the spacer includes spaced apart guides slidably supported, respectively, at opposing side walls, and a lateral beam extending transversely between the guides, the lateral beam arranged substantially within one of the cavities in the stowed position.

3. The rail car according to claim 2 , wherein the stiffening members include inner surfaces defining a plane with the beam arranged substantially outboard of the plane in the stowed position.

4. The rail car according to claim 3 , wherein the end wall includes an end sheet with the stiffening members secured to the end sheet, the beam arranged between the plane and the end sheet in the stowed position.

5. The rail car according to claim 2 , wherein the side walls include tracks secured thereto with the guides slidably supported in the tracks, the guides having multiple, longitudinally spaced first holes providing the multiple positions.

6. The rail car according to claim 5 , wherein the side walls include vertical side posts with second holes aligned with the vertical side posts, and locks removably securing the spacer to the side walls with the locks arranged in the holes in the side walls and guides.

7. The rail car according to claim 6 , wherein the side walls include side sheets with the side posts secured to the side sheets, and reinforcing plates secured to the side posts and enclosed by the side posts, the reinforcing plates providing the second holes.

8. A rail car for carrying lading comprising:

an end wall and side wall providing a cargo area, the side wall having a rub rail facing the cargo area, the side wall including a track;

an adjustable spacer for securing lading, the spacer having a guide slidably supported on the track for movement between multiple positions;

a lock removably securing the guide to the side wall, the lock arranged outboard of a plane defined by an inner surface or the rub rail; and

wherein the side wall includes vertical side posts with holes aligned with the vertical side posts, and the lock removably securing the guide to the side wall with the lock arranged in the holes in the side wall.

9. The rail car according to claim 8 , wherein the side wall includes a side sheet with the side posts secured to the side sheet, and reinforcing plates secured to the side posts and enclosed by the side posts, the reinforcing plates providing the second holes.

10. A rail car for carrying lading comprising:

an end wall and side wall providing a cargo area, the side wall having a rub rail facing the cargo area, the side wall including a track;

an adjustable spacer for securing lading, the spacer having a guide slidably supported on the track for movement between multiple positions; and

a lock removably securing the guide to the side wall, the lock arranged outboard of a plane defined by an inner surface of the rub rail; first holes defining keyways for receiving the lock in a desired orientation and preventing removal of the lock in other than the desired orientation, the guide including multiple, longitudinally-spaced first holes providing the multiple positions, wherein the keyways include a first aperture adjoining a second aperture that is smaller than the first aperture, the apertures contiguous with one another to form each of the first holes.
