Abstract

A closure tab is provided and includes a first substrate. A second substrate is adhesively attached to the first substrate. The second substrate has mechanical closure material formed thereon. A compression bond pattern is applied to the first substrate and the second substrate. The compression bond pattern includes at least one outwardly extending protrusion. The compression bond pattern may include, for example, circular bond points, stripes, or a decorative element. A method is also provided wherein the second substrate is compressed onto the first substrate by a patterned roller. The second substrate may be compressed onto the first substrate by a plurality of pins spaced in alternating offset rows.

Claims (32)

1. A closure tab comprising:

a first substrate;

an adhesive;

a second substrate adhesively attached to the first substrate by the adhesive, the second substrate having a mechanical closure formed thereon; and

a compression bond pattern applied to the first substrate and the second substrate without a thermal bond, wherein said compression bond pattern defines deformations comprising a portion of said second substrate deformed into each of the adhesive and a portion of said first substrate.

2. A closure tab according to claim 1 , wherein the compression bond pattern includes at least one deformation.

3. A closure tab according to claim 1 , wherein the compression bond pattern includes at least one stripe.

4. A closure tab according to claim 1 , wherein the compression bond pattern includes a decorative element.

5. A closure tab according to claim 1 , wherein a plurality of compression bonds of the compression bond pattern are spaced in alternating offset rows.

6. A closure tab according to claim 1 , wherein a majority of closure members on the mechanical closure material are not deformed.

7. A closure tab according to claim 1 , wherein the first or second substrates are not perforated.

8. The closure tab according to claim 1 wherein said deformations extend at least ten percent into a thickness of said first substrate.

9. An absorbent article comprising:

a front end configured for positioning adjacent a front portion of a user;

a back end configured for positioning adjacent a back portion of a user, said front and back ends extending along a longitudinal axis defined by said absorbent article;

at least one lateral extension extending in a direction along a transverse axis relative to said longitudinal axis;

at least one closure tab according to claim 1 attached distally to said lateral extension.

10. A closure tab comprising:

a first substrate and a second substrate, the second substrate having mechanical closure material formed thereon; and

the second substrate being attached to the first substrate by a plurality of compression bond points without a thermal bond;

wherein the compression bond points act to reduce longitudinal shear between the first and second substrates, said compression bond points defining deformations comprising a portion of said second substrate deformed into a portion of said first substrate.

11. The closure tab according to claim 10 wherein said deformations extend at least ten percent into a thickness of the first substrate.

12. A closure tab comprising a plurality of substrates, at least one closure member formed on at least one of said plurality of substrates, and at least one compression bond point, said at least one compression bond point defining a mechanical deformation sufficient to reduce shear between said substrates by deforming a portion of at least one of said plurality of substrates into a portion of another of said plurality of substrates.

13. A closure tab according to claim 12 , wherein said at least one closure member includes a hook member.

14. A closure tab according to claim 12 , wherein said plurality of substrates includes a tab member.

15. A closure tab according to claim 12 , wherein said at least one compression bond point defines a deformation sufficient to reduce longitudinal shear between said substrates.

16. A closure tab according to claim 12 , wherein said closure tab comprises a plurality of compression bond points.

17. A closure tab according to claim 16 , wherein said plurality of compression bond points are spaced in alternating offset rows.

18. A closure tab according to claim 16 , wherein said plurality of compression bond points forms a compression bond pattern.

19. A closure tab according to claim 18 , wherein said compression bond pattern is a pattern selected from the group consisting of circles, squares, triangles, diamonds, waves, dashes, stripes and decorative patterns.

20. A closure tab according to claim 12 wherein said plurality of substrates are not perforated.

21. The closure tab according to claim 12 wherein said deformation extends at least ten percent into a thickness of the another of said plurality of substrates.
