Abstract

The present invention provides a healing abutment for attachment to a dental implant with marking locations thereon. The marking locations either lack or have markers that provide a binary code system for retrieving unique information about the healing abutment and the underlying implant.

Claims (165)

1. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching a gingival healing abutment to the dental implant, the gingival healing abutment having binary-coded markers for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment;

taking an impression of the mouth including the first installation site;

preparing a stone model based on the impression, the stone model including teeth models and model markers indicative of the binary-coded markers;

scanning the model;

generating scan data from the scanning of the model;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site;

determining the model markers to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the binary-coded markers;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein scanning the model includes scanning the installation site and the opposing occlusal area.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining location of an implant table information.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining orientation of an implant non-rotational feature.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining a size of implant table information.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scanning is a laser scanning technique.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scanning is a mechanical sensing technique.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scanning is a photographic scanning technique.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the photographic scanning technique is a stereophotographic imaging technique.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein creating the three-dimensional image of the installation site includes emergence profile contours used on the healing abutment.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the acts of:

comparing an actual location of the dental implant in the first installation site with a desired location of the dental implant in the first installation site; and

relocating an abutment emergence location through the gingival tissue when the actual dental implant location does not correspond with the desired implant location.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining the model markers using the graphical imaging software program.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining the model markers using visual scanning.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gingival healing abutment having binary-coded markers for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment is a unitary healing abutment.

15. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching a gingival healing abutment to the dental implant, the gingival healing abutment having binary-coded markers for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment;

taking an impression of the mouth including the first installation site;

preparing a stone model based on the impression, the stone model including teeth models and model markers indicative of the binary-coded markers;

scanning the model;

generating scan data from the scanning of the model;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site using the scan data;

determining the model markers to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing a prosthetic tooth outline based on the information and the three-dimensional image;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information by subtracting given dimensions from areas of the prosthetic tooth outline with the graphical imaging software program;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information from the graphical imaging software program to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein scanning the model includes scanning the installation site and the opposing occlusal area.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining location of an implant table information.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining orientation of an implant hex on the implant table information.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining a size of implant table information.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the scanning is a laser scanning technique.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein the scanning is a mechanical sensing technique.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein the scanning is a photographic scanning technique.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the photographic scanning technique is a stereophotographic imaging technique.

24. The method of claim 15 , wherein creating the three-dimensional image of the installation site includes emergence profile contours used on the healing abutment.

25. The method of claim 15 , further comprising the acts of:

comparing an actual location of the dental implant in the first installation site with a desired location of the dental implant in the first installation site; and

relocating an abutment emergence location through the gingival tissue when the actual dental implant location does not correspond with the desired implant location.

26. The method of claim 15 , wherein the developing custom-abutment dimensional information by subtracting given dimensions from the mesial, distal, buccal, lingual, and occlusal areas of the prosthetic tooth outline.

27. The method of claim 15 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining the model markers using the graphical imaging software program.

28. The method of claim 15 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining the model markers using visual scanning.

29. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching a gingival healing abutment to the dental implant, the gingival healing abutment having binary-coded markers for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment;

generating scan data including teeth data and binary-coded markers data;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site;

determining the binary-coded markers to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the binary-coded markers;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

30. The method of claim 29 , wherein the generating scan data includes scanning the mouth including the first installation site.

31. The method of claim 29 , wherein the generating scan data includes scanning an impression of the mouth including the first installation site.

32. The method of claim 29 , wherein the generating scan data includes scanning a stone model of the mouth including the first installation site.

33. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching a gingival healing abutment to the dental implant, the gingival healing abutment having at least one informational marker for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment;

taking an impression of the mouth including the installation site;

preparing a stone model based on the impression, the stone model including teeth models and model markers indicative of the at least one informational marker;

scanning the model;

generating scan data from the scanning of the model;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site;

determining the model markers to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the model markers;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

34. The method of claim 33 , wherein the scanning is a laser scanning technique.

35. The method of claim 33 , wherein the scanning is a mechanical sensing technique.

36. The method of claim 33 , wherein the scanning is a photographic scanning technique.

37. The method of claim 33 , wherein the photographic scanning technique is a stereophotographic imaging technique.

38. The method of claim 33 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a binary coded marker.

39. The method of claim 33 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a positive informational marker.

40. The method of claim 33 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a negative informational marker.

41. The method of claim 33 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a notch.

42. The method of claim 33 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a bar code.

43. The method of claim 33 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining the model markers using the graphical imaging software program.

44. The method of claim 33 , wherein determining the model markers to gather information includes determining the model markers using visual scanning.

45. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching a gingival healing abutment to the dental implant, the gingival healing abutment having at least one informational marker for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment;

generating scan data including teeth data and informational marker data;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site;

determining the at least one informational marker to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the at least one marker;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

46. The method of claim 45 , wherein the generating scan data includes scanning the mouth including the first installation site.

47. The method of claim 45 , wherein the generating scan data includes scanning an impression of the mouth including the first installation site.

48. The method of claim 45 , wherein the generating scan data includes scanning a stone model of the mouth including the first installation site.

49. The method of claim 45 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a binary coded marker.

50. The method of claim 45 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a positive informational marker.

51. The method of claim 45 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a negative informational marker.

52. The method of claim 45 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a notch.

53. The method of claim 45 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a bar code.

54. The method of claim 45 , wherein the gingival healing abutment having at least one informational marker for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment is a unitary healing abutment.

55. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching an attachment member to the dental implant, the attachment member having at least one informational marker for identifying physical characteristics of the attachment member;

taking an impression of the mouth including the first installation site;

preparing a stone model based on the impression, the stone model including teeth models and model markers indicative of the at least one informational marker;

scanning the model;

generating scan data from the scanning of the model;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site;

determining the model markers to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the at least one informational marker;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

56. The method of claim 55 , wherein the attachment member comprises a gingival healing abutment.

57. The method of claim 55 , wherein the scanning is a laser scanning technique.

58. The method of claim 55 , wherein the scanning is a photographic scanning technique.

59. The method of claim 55 , wherein the scanning is a mechanical sensing technique.

60. The method of claim 55 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a binary-coded marker.

61. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

installing a dental implant into a first installation site in bone having overlying gingiva in a mouth;

attaching an attachment member to the dental implant, the attachment member having at least one informational marker for identifying physical characteristics of the attachment member;

generating scan data including teeth data and informational marker data;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image of the installation site;

determining the at least one informational marker to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the at least one marker;

transferring the custom-abutment dimensional information to a milling machine; and

fabricating the custom-abutment on the milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

62. The method of claim 61 , wherein the attachment member comprises a gingival healing abutment.

63. The method of claim 61 , wherein the at least one informational marker is a binary-coded marker.

64. The method of claim 61 , wherein generating scan data includes a laser scanning technique.

65. The method of claim 61 , wherein generating scan data includes a photographic scanning technique.

66. The method of claim 61 , wherein generating scan data includes a mechanical sensing technique.

67. A method of manufacturing a custom-abutment for attachment to a dental implant installed in bone having overlying gingival tissue, the dental implant having a gingival healing abutment attached thereto, the gingival healing abutment having at least one informational marker for identifying physical characteristics of the gingival healing abutment, the method comprising the acts of:

generating scan data including teeth data and informational marker data, the informational marker data being derived from the at least one informational marker on the gingival healing abutment;

transferring the scan data to a graphical imaging software program;

creating a three-dimensional image from the scan data;

determining the at least one informational marker to gather information for manufacturing the custom-abutment; and

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the at least one marker, the custom-abutment dimensional information for fabricating the custom abutment.

68. The method of claim 67 , wherein the generating scan data includes at least one of scanning at least a portion of a mouth including an installation site of the gingival healing abutment, scanning at least a portion of an impression that includes the informational marker data from the gingival healing abutment, and scanning at least a portion of a stone model of the mouth including the installation site of the dental implant.

69. The method of claim 67 , wherein the at least one informational marker is at least one of a binary coded marker, a positive informational marker, a negative informational marker, a notch, and a bar code.

70. The method of claim 67 , further including fabricating the custom abutment on a milling machine utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

71. A method of manufacturing a custom dental abutment for mating with a dental implant, comprising:

prior to the scanning step listed below, (i) attaching a gingival healing abutment to the dental implant, (ii) taking an impression of the patient's dental conditions, and (iii) preparing a model based on the impression, the gingival healing abutment having marker features that create markers in the model;

scanning the model of a patient's dental conditions, the model including teeth models and a structure corresponding to the gingival healing abutment having a top surface with the markers that indicate at least two characteristics of the dental implant installed in bone in the patient;

generating scan data from the scanning of the model;

creating a three-dimensional image of the patient's dental conditions with the scan data;

determining the markers on the model to gather information of the at least two characteristics of the dental implant;

developing custom-abutment dimensional information based on the three-dimensional image and the information gathered from the markers; and

fabricating the custom-abutment utilizing the custom-abutment dimensional information.

72. The method of claim 71 , wherein the markers on the models are binary-coded markers.

73. The method of claim 71 , wherein the markers on the models are one of the group selected from positive informational markers, negative informational markers, and a notch.
